Computer Operator-Technology Integration

Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experiences

Job Goal: The part-time Computer Operator provides class support for evening instructors using the computer lab and assists students in the lab under the supervision of the instructor. Patience and kindness are vital in working with our students, many of whom have limited English and limited computer literacy.

Responsibilities:
• Provide classroom assistance to evening teachers
• Assist in the preparation of classroom activities
• Research online resources to address academic needs of particular class or student
• Start and set up workstations, and use the smart board for classes or testing sessions
• Manage technical issues that arise during class sessions with basic troubleshooting of hardware and software
• Facilitate appropriate storage of student files during class activities
• Assist in orienting new staff to the resources available in the computer lab.
• Update software as needed
• Clean lab and equipment
• Ensure that lab is clean and orderly at the end of each class
• Alarm the lab at the end of the evening

Minimum Qualifications:
• High School Diploma or Equivalent, Associates or Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Ability to work patiently and respectfully with non-native English speaking adults at all levels
• Successful completion of word processing/data entry course, or demonstration of comparable skills
• Proficiency with MS Office suite (with the exclusion of Access)
• Ability to learn and troubleshoot basic educational software programs and interactive websites
• Classroom experience with adults preferred
• Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with instructors
• Ability to speak Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole would be a plus!

Terms of Employment:
• This is an evening position, for two nights per week, 6 – 7 hours per week, working with classes that meet Tuesday and Thursday 6-9pm for the duration of the academic year which ends June 2019
• Precise schedule will be negotiated
• There will be some initial training with the Technology Coordinator and the full-time Computer Operator.
• Salary range is $16.75/hour - $20.31 (FY18 rates) per hour, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Since 1974, SCALE has provided classes and support services to more than 1,200 adult learners (16 years and older) annually who need basic reading, writing and math skills, English instruction for non-native speakers, or a high-school credential. SCALE's fully accessible facilities have a computer lab and an on-site GED Test Center. Most classes are free. Fees are charged for orientations, adult evening school, and testing for the GED (General Educational Development) diploma and for the ADP (Adult Diploma Program).
