Debate League Coach
John F. Kennedy School

Job Goal: The purpose of the Debate League Coach is to launch and train a Kennedy student debate team as part of Boston Debate League (BDL). The BDL After-School Debate League organizes debate teams in middle schools and high schools throughout greater Boston. Debate team practice will be held at Kennedy and led by 1-2 teachers who serve as coaches. During the debate season (September - March), a coach should be present for practices after school twice per week for an hour per practice. Coaches should also attend each of the 6 tournaments throughout the season (some Friday evenings and all day Saturday for high school coaches, Saturday morning through mid-afternoon for middle school coaches).
? Run all debate practices after school – one 2-hour practice each week
? Chaperone students at three tournaments per year; judge at tournaments as needed
? Participate in coach community meetings and start-and end-of-year meetings with BDL
? Recruit new students for the debate team and make efforts to retain existing students
? Build debate knowledge when necessary (with assistance from BDL)
? Plan practices using the BDL curriculum binder and support materials as needed
? Communicate with BDL Program Manager when questions or concerns arise

? Strong inter-personal and communication skills;
? Willingness to learn about debate coaching (no prior experience necessary) and build a dedicated debate team at Kennedy;
? Strong commitment to planning and leading that goes beyond just attending tournaments;
? Willingness to create and engage in debate-centered activities that make practicing debate enjoyable;
? Ability to recruit debaters from the entire Kennedy student population.

• Stipend: $1,750 (up to 70 hrs @ $25/hour). Stipend could be split between two coaches.
