Middle School Outdoor Track and Field Coach

Job Goal: A member of the Northeastern Conference, Somerville High School has an immediate opening for a Middle School Outdoor Track and Field Coach.

Responsibilities: The middle school coach reports directly to the Director of Athletics/Assistant Director of Athletics. The coach of an individual sport must realize that any activity sponsored by SHS Athletics is part of the total program offered by SHS. Individuals in charge of such activities must utilize sound educational principles and goals if athletics are to be a worthwhile part of the overall school program. Some of the duties of the head coach shall include:

• Model the behaviors outlined in the NFHS Coaches Code of Ethics, especially those pertaining to sportsmanship.
• Demonstrates full control of the team in all matters pertaining to coaching and athletic discipline.
• Facilitate supervision of athletes during practice session and at all contests, home or away of the sport coached including supervision of the weight room, locker room, shower areas and buses before and after practices and contests.
• Implement SPS Athletic Department policies and team rules.
• Be responsible for information contained in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Handbook and the SHS Student Handbook.
• Attend all Athletic Department and SPS meetings that relate to the sport coached. Including MIAA, NEC, Coaches Associations and Athletic Awards meetings.
• Stay informed of rule changes, trends, and recommendations that affect their particular sport.
• Develop and organize an effective practice plans.
• Provide effective feedback for competitive growth and development, which may include usage of a variety of technological aide.
• Make sure that the facilities and equipment are safe and that safety procedures are taught and followed in all areas.
• Implement game plans and game management where appropriate including score reporting and return officials vouchers immediately following a contest.
• Foster partnerships with athletic groups in the community to create continuity in programming at various levels.
• Be encouraged to offer clinics and camps.
• Establish avenues of communication with other adults to identify potential resources for the enhancement of SHS athletes and athletics;
• Develop an approach to coaching which encourages outreach to the parents of the athletes and invested stakeholders
• Encourage athletes to participate in the seasonal fundraisers to subsidize spirit wear.
• Work with the SPS Athletic staff for distribution and collection of the school's athletic equipment and uniforms before, during and after the coaching season.
• All duties/responsibilities assigned by the Director of Athletics/Assistant Director of Athletics.

• Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university is preferred.
• Previous successful playing and/or coaching; experience working with adolescents.
• The successful candidate must complete Red Cross CPR, First Aid Certification, completion of the MIAA Coaches Education Class and other requirements deemed necessary by the MIAA.

Terms of Employment:
• Seasonal
• Appointments will expire unless renewed within sixty (60) days of the last regular season game
