Welcome to Harris Elementary School!
Harris School will challenge all children to reach their fullest potential and to function sucessfully as students, citizens and members of society."

The original Harris School was constructed as Woonsocket High School in 1876. It stood on the site of the original Woonsocket High School which was built in 1849 at a cost of $8000 on land donated by industrialist Edward Harris and was destroyed by a fire in 1875. The Harris School structure included a tall spire which was later torn down. Over the year, many alterations took place. An annex which served as Boyden St. Elementary School [date of construction unknown] located in the rear of the shool , was torn down prior to the 1950's. Over the years classroom space was"carved out" by splitting some rooms in half or by taking closet space, cloakrooms, and several feet from existing classrooms.

In September of 2001, after the passage of a 6 million dollar bond, the original Harris School was demolished to make way for the existing facility. The Harris students and staff were housed at a temporary location, the former St. Lous School, for 16 months while construction was completed. On December 17, 2003, the new 21 classroom facility was unveiled to the public. The new facility is complete with a full cafeteria, gymnasium, library, technology lab, music and art rooms. On January 2, 2003, the Harris students, approximately 400, and staff returned to the original site, but certainly not the "old" Harris School.
