Job Description

Leland & Gray Union Middle and High School is in Townshend, Vermont. Windham Central Supervisory Union is a geographically large district but a very close-knit community. Leland and Gray serves roughly 280 students in grades 6 through 12.

Townshend is located about twenty minutes north of Brattleboro, nestled along the West River and surrounded by the Green Mountains. The area offers extensive summer and winter outdoor recreation and access to larger towns such as Brattleboro and Keene, NH.

Our students and teachers are connected to our region through co-ops, Project Based Learning, out-of-school experiential learning opportunities, school farm programs, and our Winter Activity program.

Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly motivated and passionate individual to join our school as a full-time Middle School Physical Education (PE) / Health Teacher. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering engaging and comprehensive physical education and health instruction to students in grades 6 to 8. The role involves creating a positive and inclusive learning environment, developing students' physical fitness, promoting healthy habits, and fostering a love for lifelong physical activity.

Responsibilities:
Curriculum Development:
Develop and implement a dynamic and age-appropriate curriculum for physical education and health classes aligned with state standards and educational goals.
Design lesson plans that incorporate a variety of activities, games, and exercises to enhance students' physical fitness, motor skills, and overall well-being.
Integrate health education topics, such as nutrition, personal hygiene, mental health, and decision-making skills, into the curriculum.

Instruction and Assessment:
Deliver engaging and interactive lessons that cater to diverse learning styles and abilities.
Teach fundamental physical skills, sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play through a variety of individual and team activities.
Assess student progress regularly through formative and summative assessments, providing constructive feedback to guide their growth.
Monitor and evaluate student performance, ensuring individualized support is provided when needed.

Classroom Management:
Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment, fostering mutual respect, safety, and discipline.
Implement effective behavior management strategies, promoting a culture of respect, cooperation, and responsibility among students.
Set clear expectations for student behavior during physical activities and enforce rules consistently.

Student Engagement and Support:
Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that encourages all students to participate and succeed.
Foster a love for physical activity and promote the importance of lifelong health and fitness.
Provide individualized support and guidance to students, addressing their unique needs and abilities.
Collaborate with other educators, parents, and support staff to develop strategies for students with special needs or challenges.


Professional Development and Collaboration:
Stay updated with current trends and best practices in physical education and health instruction.
Participate in professional development activities, workshops, and conferences to enhance teaching skills and knowledge.
Collaborate with colleagues to align curriculum, share resources, and contribute to the overall improvement of the physical education program.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Physical Education or Health Education.
Vermont teaching licensure in Physical or Health Education. Dual licensure is preferred.
Strong knowledge of physical education principles, health education, and child development.
Passion for promoting physical fitness, health, and wellness among middle school students.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage students, parents, and colleagues.
Ability to differentiate instruction to accommodate diverse learning needs and abilities.
Experience in creating and implementing engaging physical education and health curriculum.
Strong classroom management and behavior management skills.
Commitment to continuous professional growth and staying abreast of current research and best practices.
