Job Description
Culinary Arts / Vocational Teacher The Cape Cod Collaborative Waypoint Academy in Yarmouth (Massachusetts) has an opening for a Culinary Arts / Vocational Teacher for the 2023-2024 school year.
The Cape Cod Collaborative operates public day schools for students with significant learning challenges, utilizing a highly-specialized team approach to support student strengths and help build independence. This is a challenging, yet rewarding opportunity to learn and grow professionally.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s / Master’s Degree in Teaching
- Minimum five (5) years (within the last seven years) full-time employment experience directly related to culinary arts and working with young people placed at risk
- Culinary Arts certification from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Or, ability to earn a Massachusetts Preliminary Vocational Technical Teacher License in the appropriate subject by achieving a passing score on the subject-specific written and performance exams and achieving a passing score on one of the literacy skills MTELs
- Possession of current Food Sanitation Management and Allergen Awareness certificates and Certification to teach ServSafe
- Evidence of mastery of a wide variety of teacher competencies and the understanding of instructional techniques as well as the ability to manage electronic databases

Summary of Job Description:
The Culinary Arts Instructor is responsible for the instruction and training of basic culinary arts skills to students in grades 5-12. Food safety, personal hygiene, cleaning and sanitizing, and other pertinent areas of instructional practice to ensure ServSafe preparation is required. This position requires a deep understanding of high-functioning special education students who have social and emotional deficits. Applicants should be problem solvers, have a sense of humor, be creative, understand best practices in education, and have exceptional communication and classroom management skills. The successful applicant will be able to manage small groups of students who have a history of trauma, neglect, and deprivation. This position has tremendous opportunities to be all encompassing from: meal preparation, off-site grocery shopping, interdisciplinary learning with the arts, ELA, and mathematics, and more. Responsibilities:
- Provides a vocational technical course of study that is aligned to state curriculum frameworks and meets the learning needs of the students and maintains a safe learning environment
- Aligns with vocational technical skills and content embodied in the school's curriculum map to achieve equitable student outcomes
- Earns and/or maintains all required licensure
- Plans, organizes and provides appropriate learning experiences within the assigned area of responsibility
- Teaches technical skills and knowledge to provide students with the competence to become skilled in their field
- Develops lesson plans and organizes class time so that demonstration, instruction, hands-on practice, review and final activities can be accomplished within the allotted time
- Continuously improves the instruction, curriculum, and equipment so that this CTVE area is current with all trends in the field and is fully and properly preparing students for available and emerging jobs
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
- Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor
- Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects to communicate these objectives to students
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media in order to support student success
- Implements the district’s mission, philosophy of education and instructional standards and objectives
- Assesses and documents the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
- Attends staff and department meetings and serves on staff committees as required
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy regulation
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
- Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence especially as related to the specific assignment and student grade and subject area appropriateness
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with others
- Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students, colleagues, and parents concerning both the broad academic/vocational and behavioral progress of assigned students
- Develop positive relationships with culinary arts community partners in the area and actively solicit their support
- Other duties deemed necessary by the Director or designee
