The Akron Board of Education announces an opening for an Interpreter (Certified) for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program; Job Code 131, Time Schedule: 380. Salary TBD. This is a State Teacher Retirement position.

QUALIFICATIONS -  Required
  • ODE Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired Associate License; 
  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree from an Interpreter Training Program.
  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), minimum 3.5 preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret/transliterate for all ages (Preschool through adults).   
POSITION DESCRIPTION
  • Facilitate communication in a variety of environments; 
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English; 
  • Demonstrate proficiency in various signed language and communication modes (i.e. CASE, MCE, ASL); 
  • Be able to explain the appropriate use of interpreting services; 
  • Be able to interpret in a variety of educational settings and situations (classrooms, staff meetings, field trips, assemblies, sports, one-to-one, small groups, large groups); 
  • Provide oral, simultaneous or manual interpreter services depending upon the individual needs of the child or children served; 
  • Interpreting-the incidental or substantial rewording of the speaker’s remarks so that the content and spirit of the speaker’s communication is accurately conveyed to the deaf person, using language and communication mode that is most readily understood by the person for whom they are interpreting; 
  • Translating (transliteration) – the verbatim repetition of the speaker’s remarks in a communication mode most familiar to the deaf person for whom the interpreting is being provided; 
  • Ability to interpret from sign language to Spoken English:
  • Provide interpreting in Academic classes and/or Specials, based upon the determination of related services in the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP):
  • Provides interpreting for parent-teacher or other conferences when appropriate;
  • Assists in additional support services as requested to carry out the school program.
