The Physical Therapist develops, implements and coordinates a physical therapy program through evaluation and intervention services, including direct services to the child and consultative services on behalf of the child, such as support of the teacher and/or other staff members in accordance with the students IEP or health plan. The therapist will evaluate, plan, and implement activities to address gaps relative to development, sensory motor, gross motor, muscle strength, range of motion, postural reflexes and needs for adaptive equipment. 

 

  • Evaluate student’s performance capacity and gaps relative to development, sensory motor, gross motor, muscle strength, range of motion, postural reflexes and needs for adaptive equipment.
  • Evaluate students through professional observation, therapeutic handling, record review, and parent, student, and teacher interviews. 
  • Interpret assessment findings and appropriately communicate information with parents, staff and Special Services Department.       
  • Collaborate with the school team to support the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
  • Provide meaningful therapy to students requiring physical therapy as determined by a doctor’s prescription and IEP recommendations.
  • Collaborates with student, school team members, parents, community agencies, administrators, and physicians regarding effective coordination of services.
  • Develops and implements individualized PT intervention strategies.
  • Collaborates with student, school team members, parents, community agencies, administrators, and physicians regarding transition from school to community, preparing students to function independently when therapy goals have been met.
  • Documents therapy services provided in accordance with department policy and procedure.
  • Adheres to professional, ethical and legal standards of practice as well as District and Board of Education policy.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate records, reports, and procedures.
  • Establishes and maintains positive and open communication with students, staff, parents, and medical/community personnel.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by administration.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited physical therapy program
  • Current State of Michigan Licensure
  • Demonstrated experience supporting school-aged students in a clinical or school setting
