Job Description

JOB GOAL: To develop and implement Individual Educational Plan (IEP) goals and objectives, provide curriculum-based instruction and behavior management programs, and prepare students to return to a less restrictive environment.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Provide a basic core program for identified students consistent with state education requirements and the students' IEP.
•Develop and implement IEP goals and objectives based on evaluation results.
•Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects in order to communicate these objectives to the students.
•Employ instructional methods and materials that are deemed appropriate for accomplishing stated objectives.
•Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
•Diagnose the learning disabilities of students and seek the assistance of district specialists as needed.
•Participate in Safety-Care training and updating safest strategies if students are exhibiting challenging or dangerous behavior.
•Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student conduct, and, for the classroom, develop responsible rules of classroom behavior and procedures, and maintain order in the classroom environment in a fair and just manner.
•Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for instructional assistant(s).
•Provide social skill training for students in conjunction with goals and objectives in the IEP to assist students in forming positive relationships with peers and adults.
•Provide instruction in all areas of the students' academic strengths and weaknesses.
•Administer and score educational evaluations or re-evaluations.
•Complete appropriate special education records.
•Consult with administrators, teachers and parents regarding student progress and/or problems.
•Participate in all team meetings and IEP meetings when scheduled.
•Provide appropriate materials to enable the student to realize goals and objectives stated in the IEP.
•Coordinate and supervise other special services being provided to students.
•Confer frequently with parents and professional staff members regarding the educational, social, and adjustment problems of the students.
•Assist other professional staff in resolving the unique educational, psychological and/or discipline needs of students.
•Assist in reviewing student referrals to the Collaborative behavioral programs.
•Assist the student and/or parents in making a realistic assessment of their child's abilities and in establishing educational and occupational goals in keeping with those abilities.
•Provide motivation to students who have difficulty attending in the classroom and/or who have difficulty engaging themselves in educationally related activities.
•Be involved in on-going professional study related to the education and psychology of the mild/moderate special needs student.
•Maintain accurate records for state reports.
•Communicate with outside agencies which are providing services to the student and/or to research available student services.
•Participate in and conduct staff development activities.
•Develop, monitor, and evaluate curriculum in an on-going manner.
•Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Educational Services

    Job Requirements

    • • Rhode Island certification as a Special Educator
      • Experience with mild/moderate classroom preferred.
      • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Superintendents may find appropriate and acceptable.
    • At least 1 year of relevant experience preferred
    • Master degree preferred
    • Citizenship, residency or work visa required
