Job Description


Under the direct supervision of the Director of Educational Services and the special education teacher, the purpose of the position is to support student needs per their IEP and as directed by the classroom teacher. Experience working with students with physical and intellectual disabilities preferred.


• Ability to lift children.

• Assists students with toileting/changing diapers, when needed.

• Monitors recesses.

• Coverage for lunch.

• Assists in feeding, when needed.

• Assists in hygiene training with support from school nurse-teacher.

• Assists and supports students in classroom and/or other areas of I.E.P.

• Assists related services provider (i.e., Physical Therapist).

• Participates in daily and long range lesson and classroom activity planning.
• Conducts learning exercises with small groups of students.

• Helps maintain individual records for each student.

• Guides students in developing positive relationships with peers and adults.

• Alerts the teacher to special needs of individual students.

• Provides escort and assistance to students as necessary.

• Assists teacher in maintaining work and study areas.

• Collects and displays suitable material for educational displays.

• Given teaching objective by the teacher, the assistant will develop materials and group lessons.

• Corrects students’ work and prescribes additional work to remediate students’ weaknesses with teacher supervision.

• Participates in discipline procedure and prescribes consequences for student behavior under teacher supervision.

• Maintains a cooperative staff relationship with all personnel functioning within the educational setting.

• Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing behavior or academic skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.

• Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular classroom teacher.

• Assists the teacher in school yard and bus duty.

• Performs any and all other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or administrator.

PAY RATE: $18 per hour, with benefits after 90th day of continuous service

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Through the 2022-2023 school year

    Job Requirements

    • • High school diploma or GED

      • RI Teacher Assistant certification

      • Completion of paraprofessional course (reimbursement of course for successful applicants)

      • Specialized experience/training may be required depending on the IEP of the student, including Safety Care

    • At least 1 year of relevant experience preferred
    • High School/Trade School degree preferred
    • Citizenship, residency or work visa required
