Coordinator of Social Emotional Supports, Services and Programming

 

 

General Description:

Responsibilities:

  • Develop systems and strategies to assure equitable opportunities for success in the least restrictive environment.
  • Provide consultation to schools regarding targeted interventions and research- based strategies to assure a comprehensive model of student success is in place.
  • Commitment to Social Justice and experience working with a diverse population of students
  • Understanding of and when possible, experience implementing trauma informed practices
  • Oversee and support implementation of SEEK (Social Emotional Enhancement Kennedy Program) for students in grades K-6 who have been diagnosed with a primary emotional disability who as a result, do not have coping mechanisms or emotional regulation strategies. Students require direct specialized instruction both related to academics and emotional regulation including but not limited to anxiety management, flexibility and self-advocacy.
  • Support the full range of social emotional therapeutic programming across the district including Path and Next Wave/Full Circle.
  • Work with the Director of Special Education, Special Education administrative team, Student Services, and building administrators to lead vision of meaningful programming, inclusion and therapeutic support for all students across the district.
  • Provide support and training to staff on best practices related to instructional methodologies, crisis prevention intervention, predictability and structure, functional analysis of behaviors, development of behavior intervention plans and systematic data monitoring
  • Engage in outreach to families, agencies and the community to engage all stakeholders in creating positive outcomes for all students.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, Community Schools, families and community stakeholders to promote the ongoing development of the academic, personal, social, and emotional potential of all students.
  • Support and nurture the social and emotional wellbeing of all students.
  • Assist staff, teams, parents and students across the District to identify and build on existing strengths, encourage the exploration of individualized interests, and help students to develop core competencies that will contribute to a safe learning environment where students feel comfortable to make mistakes, are engaged lifelong learners, and are active members of their school community.
  • Provide ongoing family support, training, and consultation across the District to coordinate opportunities between home and school to ensure skill generalization.
  • Work collaboratively with BCBA’s, Student Services, and other social emotional supports across the district to develop a continuum of services, social emotional supports’ and agencies' across the district
  • Resolve parent and staff concerns through effective and timely communication
  • Ensure district compliance with all federal and state education laws and regulations, as well as compliance with Somerville Public Schools policies and procedures.
  • Perform all duties of Special Education Director as defined by M.G.L. c. 71B and Mass Regulations 603 CMR 212.00.
  • Ensure all students have full access to the curriculum outlined in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks including electives.
  • Provide therapeutic supports to all students when social, emotional, environmental or physical conditions interferes with the learning process or their adjustment to school
  • Implement crisis intervention and prevention techniques
  • Coordinate behavior management strategies and implement social/emotional curriculum
  • Coordinate positive reinforcement efforts in conjunction with other staff
  • Supervise and evaluate program staff.
  • Maintain appropriate records and reports including input of behavior data
  • Develop strong relationships with building and district administrators and staff to facilitate inclusion opportunities for students.

Requirements:                                                                                                                           

  • MA DESE Administrator of Special Education or license eligible
  • Master’s Degree, with specialization in special education and at least 5 years experience in special education in public schools, working with students with emotional disabilities or in a therapeutic setting
  • Knowledge of and experience in evidence-based strategies for working with students with Social/Emotional disabilities
  • Experience in setting up and using data monitoring systems for student outcomes related to behavioral progress
  • Experience in coaching school-based staff in behavioral strategies. Experience in providing professional development to teachers and other school staff.
  • Experience in establishing program based token economy and level system
  • Experience in coaching school-based staff in social emotional strategies.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends when necessary to provide support and professional development to staff, families and community

 Preferred:

  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst Certification (BCBA)
  • Experience working as administrator of program for students with emotional disabilities
  • DESE School Social Worker/Adjustment Counselor License and LICSW
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with emotionally disturbed children/adolescents in a clinical or educational therapeutic milieu in which s/he was providing direct, clinical services.
  • Experience providing clinical supervision to a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate competence in a range of therapeutic modalities including individual, group and family therapies

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge:

  • Passionate and knowledgeable about effective and meaningful access for students experiencing social emotional dysregulation
  • Depth of knowledge regarding special education laws, regulations, processes and procedures
  • Able to solve problems in a timely manner and knowing when to seek others’ input prior to decision-making
  • Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills enabling information sharing and the development of trusting relationships with parents, staff and administrators
  • Proven supervision and evaluation skills
  • Experience working with and leading a team

Other

  • All other duties assigned by the Superintendent, Principal, Administrator of Special Education or his/her designee
