Job Description

Job Goal:

The Assistant Principal Team Leader is directly responsible to the Principal for any and all aspects of instructional leadership, administration, discipline and coordination.

 

The Assistant Principal Team Leader serves in concert with the Principal in relating the philosophy and aims of the school and district to the instructional practice of the school to the end that the highest possible standards of student achievement, instructional excellence and school morals may be attained. The Assistant Principal Team Leader could be responsible for the school during the absence of the Principal.

 

The work of the Assistant Principal Team Leader consists of assisting the Community Assistant Principals and Deans of Students in performing the many routine phases of administration predominantly within the community that they are assigned and this may also include other functions and responsibilities required by the Principal.

 

Qualifications:

  • A master's degree from a college or university approved by the School Committee
  • A minimum of five (5) years successful teaching and/or administrative experience
  • Massachusetts Principal/Assistant Principal Certification 
  • Experience in teaching or related experience in public education especially at the hIgh school level. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Principal in the organization, supervision of the Deans of Students, discipline and administration of the school and to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the Principal when directed.
  • Counsel and advise the professional needs of the Assistant Principals and Dean of Students.
  • Mentor all members of the high school Assistant Principal team.
  • Attend weekly community team meetings and assist in developing agendas, reviewing data, and determining action plans to support student success and engagement.
  • Collaborate with and give feedback to the Counseling Director and Assistant Principals on the community meeting process and as needed coordinate improvements.
  • Attend parent/guardian meetings, investigative interviews, and suspension hearings with the Community Assistant Principals and provide assistance with development of attendance, behavior, and safety plans for students.
  • Assist Assistant Principals and Dean of Students in meetings and conferences with students, parents and/or teachers.
  • Assist Assistant Principals with communications to parents/guardians such as emergency removals and dispositions. 
  • Meet weekly with the Associate Principal to communicate about academic and student support updates.
  • Assist the Assistant Principals in the organization and structure of the RISSP classroom, detention, and morning and afternoon duties.
  • Provide support with building safety at arrival and dismissal times, lunches, and throughout the school day as needed.
  • Facilitate department meetings for Assistant Principals and Deans of Students.
  • Provide coverage and support in community offices when Assistant Principals or Deans of Students are absent.
  • Collaborate with the Community Assistant Principals and Deans of Students to consistently implement the Tier 1 guide (behavior), determine consistent expectations and next steps for conduct referrals, and monitor posted actions plans for consistency.
  • Collaborate and implement a consistent plan to monitor student attendance and tardies. 
  • In collaboration with the Community Assistant Principals and Deans of Students, determine how attendance/tardies calls to parents/guardians will occur in a timely manner and conduct referrals are responded to within 48 hours.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Principals and plan how the Deans of Students will implement small group weekly sessions for students based on need.
  • Collaborate with and plan the four work days for the Assistant Principals and Deans before the start of the school year and the one work day at the end of year with the Counseling Department (K8 student transition meeting).
  • Collaborate with school Mediators to develop programming to proactively address issues that have been identified as sources of student conflict.
  • Assist the Principal in disseminating school information concerning school policies and practices to students, parents and teachers. As needed, assist with the planning of assemblies to disseminate information to students. 
  • Administrative liaison to Senior Class Advisor and Class Officers for all events including fundraising, dances, prom, class day, and graduation and develop a guidebook for future class advisors and officers.
  • Perform other duties delegated by the Principal.

Reports to:  The School Principal

 

Terms of Employment:

  • 1 Year appointment 
  • Work year is 206 days for the 2022-2023 school year
  • Salary is in accordance with Level 1 of the Somerville Administrator’s Association collective bargaining agreement.
