School Social Worker - Intervention and Support

This position performs specialized support in an educational setting to enable students to achieve optimal learning using expertise in trauma-informed care, mental health, and counseling. The position collects, interprets, synthesizes and assesses information about student’s disengagement/chronic absenteeism using attendance data, community and school environment, family dynamics, economic differences, individual and systematic barriers and significant crises that influence academic, behavioral, social and emotional success to create intervention and support plans.

Essential Duties

1. Creates a student/family engagement/attendance program to reduce truancy and chronic absenteeism, prevent dropout and increase graduation outcomes by providing interventions and supports to students, families and teachers
2. Works collaboratively with students, families and school staff to identify, address and remove barriers to student and family engagement as well as school attendance 
3. Provides and monitors student interventions and communicates progress to the school team.
4. Implements age appropriate interventions and materials to address student needs from plans including counseling.
5. Trains staff in chronic absenteeism/truancy/attendance-related prevention strategies, trauma awareness and supports, and parent/school connections.
6. Serves as a resource to teachers and staff regarding family engagement, trauma support and the academic/social needs of students, including recommendation of interventions
7. Conferences and provides information and support to families/guardians of students.
8. Conducts specialized individual and group counseling sessions to address specific emotional, social, and behavioral needs of students
9. Serves as a liaison between the student, home, school, private counseling facilities and community resources such as social services, court services, and family service agencies.
10. Provides follow-up support and periodic re-evaluation services as necessary.
11. Makes court appearances to present data and performs court-requested evaluations.
12. Maintains accurate case records.
13. Creates student attendance/family engagement programs that reduce truancy, prevents dropouts and increases graduation outcomes by providing primarily tier 2 and 3 interventions and supports to students, teachers/staff and families. Other Duties Performs any other related duties as assigned by the school principal.
14. May be asked to gather background information on the student’s social history by conducting behavioral observations, making home visits, conducting interviews, and reviewing school records.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required) Possess or be eligible for a Pupil Personnel License or other relevant licensure.  Possess a Master’s degree in Social Work. Must possess the ability to collect, interpret, and synthesize information about a student’s social history, community environment, family dynamics, economic differences, and significant crises that influence academic and behavioral functioning. Must have demonstrated ability to work cooperatively as an interdisciplinary team member and devise an appropriate service plan for referred students and their families. Must possess the ability to synthesize and interpret diagnostic and assessment data. Must possess excellent communication and time management skills. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community agencies, students, families, team members, and others.
