Job Description

Position Overview

This position has responsibility for outreach functions, including media relations, crisis, emergency, and school incident communications, and other communications and outreach practices, that lead to stronger engagement and partnerships within the Loudoun County Public Schools community. The position will be responsible for developing the plan to accomplish broader community awareness and engagement through communications as well as execution on those strategies.


Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:

  • Executes community outreach and engagement through strategic media relations, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request management, and the development of engagement and partnership pathways for individuals and organizations that align with LCPS mission and vision.
  • Analyzes the internal and external communications landscape to identify opportunities to streamline and amplify, to increase positive impact for the students and the community. Works cross-functionally to support the communications goals of other departments across the division.
  • Manages the crisis, emergency and school incident communication process.
  • Supports FOIA request processing, management, documentation and response.
  • Fosters positive and collaborative relationships with the media, community residents, local nonprofit organizations, businesses, and student organizations.
  • Coordinates and executes key community engagement events,
  • Monitors, measures and reports on the success of media relations efforts and community engagement strategies.
  • Represents LCPS in community initiatives and at events that support LCPS goals.
  • Networks and collaborates with local organizations and community leaders.




 Below are the qualifications for this position:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field, including proven journalistic writing
  • Five years of professional experience in media relations, community relations, campaign organization, or other related experience
  • Demonstrates effective project management skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to meet the needs of the media requests and/or support community functions
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • Knowledge of the LCPS community, community development issues, and experience working with diverse communities
  • Strong media relations skills desired
  • Strong skill with MS Office tools including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Possesses the professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with school personnel

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Itinerant travel is required, and the employee is frequently required to change locations and adapt to multiple environments across schools and offices. Ability to drive and navigate to multiple locations occasionally within a single day is required.


FLSA status: Exempt

Months/Days/Hours: 12 months, 248 days, 8 hours per day

Salary Range: $82,622 to $136,120 annually
