Job Description

While actual roles and responsibilities will vary depending on individual circumstances, the Student Adjustment Counselor will generally be required to perform some or all of the following tasks. Note that this list is not all-inclusive and that the administration may also assign other tasks he/she deems appropriate.

1. Maintain the highest and most appropriate learning expectations of students at all times as fostered by the school.
2. Counsel students whose behavior, school progress, or mental or physical handicap or condition necessitates assistance.
3. Encourage families and students to participate in the learning process through frequent and meaningful communication about students’ personal and academic progress.
4. Assess students referred for counseling due to school adjustment concerns.
5. Provide counseling interventions and social skills training in an individual/group setting as well as play-based models.
6. Consult with staff and families regarding student concerns and refer to outside agencies as appropriate.
7. Facilitate the completion of Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans
8. Actively participate in the Building Emergency Response Team and Child Study Team Meetings.
9. Background knowledge of and experience with students who have emotional disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and other social/adjustment challenges as well as students at the early childhood level (ages 3-6).
10. Assists teachers and staff in behavioral interventions and strategies to assist learning.
11. Develop and/or implement a positive system of student recognition.
12. Recommend in class interventions or other treatment to assist in helping students succeed.
13. Ensure that all students are offered equitable opportunities to participate in school activities.
14. Provide resources for faculty and families to address students’ needs.
15. Present results of testing to staff and families in a timely, effective, and professional manner.
16. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all members of school community to carry out responsibilities.
17. Provides assigned student population the help needed to become acquainted with the educational programs, support services, policies and procedures, and facilities of the school system.
18. Assists the principal and the staff in their transition to first grade and/or kindergarten as necessary.
19. Provide counseling services as defined in student’s IEP and 504 plans.
20. Other duties as reasonably assigned by the Principal and/or Director of Pupil Personnel Services.

    Job Requirements

    • Licensure requirements:
      Massachusetts School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor, All Levels
      2-3 years school counseling experience preferred
      Experience using technology in the classroom preferred.
      Master’s degree in Counseling/Social Work or related area
      Ability to relate well to others and ability to motivate students, and to effectively work with colleagues and families.
      Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable
