New Century Scholar Coordinator and Virtual Learning Facilitator

SWAIN COUNTY SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION

Reports to HS/MS Principals

Non-Exempt part-time hourly position not to exceed 25 hours per week.

 

PURPOSE

The New Century Scholars program provides support, encouragement and incentive to selected students.  NCS targets “high potential” students and provides extra support and last dollar college tuition assistance. The program’s goals are to improve academic readiness, bolster student persistence toward high school graduation and increase the college-going.

The Virtual Learning Facilitator daily monitors attendance, progress, pacing and performance, to  support students completing online courses.  The facilitator is responsible for classroom management and supervision of students.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Plan/coordinate activities, learning opportunities, and service opportunities for NCS students

    • Coordinate NCS Information Night for new 7th graders and their parents/guardians

    • Meet with and coordinate activities for students at middle and high school

    • Locate/communicate volunteer service opportunities for students

    • Assist students in completing FAFSA and scholarship applications

  • Coordinate fundraising efforts

    • Co-coordinate annual NCS fundraiser

  • Monitor progress of each NCS student

    • Track student grades, attendance, behavior, and volunteer service hours

    • Refer students for tutoring/counseling/guidance/academic support/etc. as needed

    • Convene school-based NCS selection committees and coordinate annual student nomination process

    • Promotion of NCS Induction at Southwestern Community College

    • Coordinate communication with students and parents/guardians regarding student progress and program requirements

    • Maintain NCS records/files regarding NCS student progress

  • Promote/publicize NCS

    • Represent NCS at program Steering Committee meetings

    • Make presentations to area civic organizations regarding NCS, as needed

    • Promote NCS program within school and community

    • Promote NCS to Swain County Public School 6th grade students

 
  • Virtual Learning Facilitator

    • Create and maintain accurate records of student attendance pacing, performance, progress and communication throughout the online learning experience.

    • Supports students using technology and electronic curriculum in a virtual environment while integrating various technological solutions and techniques, including supplementing and reinforcing the curriculum and student achievement with online and offline materials and activities.

    • Maintain an environment conducive to learning. 

  • Comply with all Swain County Board of Education policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Language Skills – Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written.

  • Computer Skills – Proficient with basic computer operation and software.  Word processing, specialized database, spreadsheets.

  • Other – Possess planning and organizational skills, strong interpersonal skills
