Job Description

General Job Function:  

 Performs a variety of skilled technical duties associated with the operation and maintenance of

athletic fields and facilities, athletic field preparation, and general maintenance of Espanola

Valley High School baseball and softball fields and also Carlos Vigil Middle School Football field.

Implements regularly scheduled maintenance activities.

Additional responsibilities include significant interaction with the Facilities Director, general

public, athletic directors, coaches, players, and event organizers. Will prepare and maintain

athletic fields for league games.

 

Education/Training/Experience

  • 3 years’ experience in grounds keeping
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Applicant must have a New Mexico Driver’s license

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

  • .
  • Knowledge of turf grass and pesticides with previous application experience.
  • Knowledge in the safe mechanical operation and calibration of mechanical equipment, hand

operated as well as pressurized spray equipment, lawn mowers, weed-eaters, utility tractors.

  • Knowledge of aerating, verti-cutting, sweeping, topdressing fertilization and irrigation repair.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work place.
  • Necessary knowledge, skills and abilities relative to position.
  • Knowledge and skills in preparing football, softball and baseball fields; ability to work

harmoniously and cooperatively with other employees and the public.

  • Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking, and weeding.
  • Methods, equipment and materials used in grounds keeping work.
  • Safe work procedures in the

operation of hand and power tools.

Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to): 

Standard office equipment and vehicle for district travel. A district car may be used or if the employee uses his/her own vehicle mileage reimbursement is available.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit,

talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or

operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is

occasionally required to climb, balance: stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is also

required to use feet, ankles, legs, hands and arms to operate necessary equipment.

Must be able to perform moderate to heavy physical work with prolonged standing and walking

for extended periods of time, walking over rough or uneven surfaces, stretching, bending,

pushing, stooping, climbing, crouching, crawling, moving, lifting, and carrying loads weighing

between 50-95 pounds.

Occasional to frequent exposure to inclement weather conditions while performing work.

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an

Work is performed outdoors while exposed to dampness, fumes, odors, dust, dirt, rain, heat,

cold, chemicals, machinery with moving parts, and loud noises. The employee is occasionally

exposed to wet and/or wet and/or humid conditions.

The noise level in the work environment is loud when operating equipment

 

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Operates manual and automatic irrigation systems as required.
  2. Assists in maintenance and

repair of irrigation and drainage systems.

  1. Reports serious problems to supervisor.
  2. Operate a variety of mowers to maintain athletic fields and lawns inspect tractor and mower

for safe and proper operation; maintain equipment as needed, replacing fuel, fluids, and oil.

  1. Mow, edge, trim and rake fields; operate riding mowers, push mowers, light duty vehicles,

blowers, sweepers, trimmers, edger, and weed eaters.

  1. Rake, sweep, blow and pick up clippings, paper, and trash from athletic fields.
  2. Prepare the fields which will include dragging the infield, chalking the field according to

specified dimensions, watering infield, and setting bases.

  1. Field maintenance will include filling infield holes, adding clay to infield when necessary and

inspecting the ball fields for proper safety.

  1. Inspects grounds, facilities, and buildings on a daily

basis, looking for safety concerns and maintenance needs.

  1. Completes damage report and notifies supervisor of needed repairs.
  2. Utilize independent judgment in performing grounds maintenance activities.
  3. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  4. Perform other duties as requested or required.

  1. Demonstrates reliability as evidenced by attendance records and punctuality.
  2. Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.
  3. Begins and completes work within the allotted time.
  4. Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the work environment.
  5. Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment including its capabilities, limitations and appropriate/special application,
  6. Protects the District’s resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
  7. Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
