Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
To provide audiological services in the following areas: hearing conservation, identification of hearing loss, assessment of hearing loss and other abilities, amplification and other assistive technology, educational planning and support, direct (re) habilitation services, consultative services to districts, charter schools and agencies, and family support.

SUPERVISION RECIEVED
Works under the supervision of the Director with wide latitude to exercise independent professional judgement. Work is subject to review on a periodic basis or upon completion for results achieved and for adherence to professional standards and conduct.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORKAND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

To provide community leadership to ensure infants, toddlers, and youth with hearing loss are identified, evaluated, and provided with appropriate intervention services.

To continually serve students and families in a hearing screening program for preschool and school-age children.

To collaborate with audiometric technicians and other appropriate personnel to screen for hearing loss.

To perform follow-up comprehensive audiological evaluations.

To assess or make appropriate referrals for central auditory function.

To make appropriate referrals for further audiological, communication, educational, psychological, or medical assessment.

To interpret audiological assessment results to families, school, and district personnel.

To serve as a member of the RI School for the Deaf educational team in the evaluation, planning, and placement process.

To serve as a member of the consultative outreach team serving students, districts and charter schools throughout RI that serve deaf and hard of hearing children.

Make recommendations regarding placement, related service needs, communication needs, and modification of classroom environments for students with hearing impairments

To provide in-service training on hearing and hearing impairments and their implications to district and school personnel, children, and parents.

To make recommendations about the use of hearing aids, cochlear implants, group and classroom amplification and assistive listening devices.

To collaborate with schools, parents, teachers, special support personnel, and relevant professionals who serve deaf and hard of hearing children to ensure delivery of appropriate services ensuring that all students have the best auditory access to the general curriculum possible.

    Job Requirements

    • KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
      A thorough knowledge of audiology and the demonstrated ability to communicate the special needs of children with hearing loss in a variety of environments.

      EDUCATION
      Possession of a Masters or Doctorate Degree in Audiology required. Additional graduate and undergraduate coursework in the area of education and/or special education preferred.

      EXPERIENCE
      Such as may have been gained from at least five years of employment as an audiologist.

      Licensure as an Audiologist by the State of Rhode Island Department of Health is required
    • At least 5 years of relevant experience preferred
    • Master degree preferred
    • Citizenship, residency or work visa required
