Job Description

This position is for the school year only.

Job Goal:Focus on enabling students to engage in daily life activities at school that they find meaningful and purposeful. Occupational therapy is a related service that is designed to assist a child with a disability to access the general curriculum in the least restrictive environment as much as possible.

Supervision:Reports to the Occupational Therapist and the Director of Student Support Services.

Performance Responsibilities:

Planning and implementing occupational therapy intervention programs in collaboration with the supervising occupational therapist
Collaboration and communication with other members of the educational team
Participation in team meetings relevant to supporting the student with identified special needs within the school
Participation in instructional support/pre-referral activities that do not involve screening or evaluation
Plan and implement occupational therapy interventions meeting the individual’s specific goals and objectives as stated in the IEP
Provision of training to members of the educational team for implementation and carry over of student’s program
Plan and implement accommodations as outlined in the IEP or 504 plan with supervising occupational therapist
Documentation of student intervention notes and attendance
Develop and use of adapted materials that enable the student’s school participation
Documentation of progress reports and annual summaries in conjunction with supervising occupational therapist
Contribute to the collection of evaluative data in the re-evaluation process (not initial evaluations) as deemed appropriate by the supervising occupational therapist
Communication with the supervising occupational therapist about caseload and intervention programs
Collaboration with educational staffing regarding implementation of student intervention programs

Special Knowledge/Abilities For Position:The position requires the applicant to be fluent in Microsoft Word. The applicant must possess basic computer skills, as well as, strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to work with various electrical equipment, such as high or low volt electrical stimulator, ultrasound and other machines. Must be able to handle more than one task or patient at a time. Must be able to organize time efficiently.

    The newest remodeled school is Colegrove Park Elementary School, which opened in January of 2016. This school was remodeled to maintain its rich historical character while also creating educational spaces for student collaboration, independent work and study. The mission of Colegrove Park Elementary School is to promote high expectations for student achievement with instruction designed to meet the needs of all learners.

    Brayton Elementary School promotes student learning of values, knowledge and skills to meet 21st Century academic and behavioral expectations.     Greylock Elementary School seeks to promote a love of learning that develops into a lifelong pursuit of new knowledge.     North Adams Public Schools offers a Prekindergarten Program located at Johnson School in North Adams. Our program is integrated with special education students as well as typical students.     Job Requirements

    • Education, Work Experience, and Licensure:

      Required: Current Massachusetts licensure as an Occupational Therapist Assistant. Associate’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited school.

      Preferred: Two years of prior work experience in occupational therapy.

      Physical Requirements:Must be able to tolerate sitting, prolonged standing, walking and climbing stairs. Must be able to reach, bend, and squat at times. Must be able to carry 20-30 pounds in order to carry equipment and supplies. Must be able to lift 60 pounds on an occasional basis. Must be able to push and maneuver a wheelchair in order to transport a 250 pound student. Must be able to transfer students up to 250 pounds who require maximal assistance. There is a frequent requirement of fine manipulation associated with the required use of a computer, typewriter, keyboard, calculator, and other business machines. The use of medical equipment is also required.

      Environmental Conditions: The occupant is required to work indoors. May be exposed to sharp objects, various levels of noise, disagreeable odors, agitated and emotionally distraught students and families, environmental hazards, infectious diseases and chemical agents. The occupant may come into contact with medical and/or bodily fluids.
