Ames Community School District is seeking a long-term Substitute School Counselor to begin the 2021-22 school year. 
 

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
  • Assists students to:
    • Enhance awareness of uniqueness of self.
    • Develop appreciation for others that will enrich interpersonal relationships.
    • Build relationships related to school and home.
    • Utilize knowledge and skills for developing and maintaining good emotional, physical and mental health as part as responsible citizenship.
    • Develop understanding of the importance of meeting and exceeding educational proficiencies in order to function in a rapidly changing society.
    • Realize the influence of one’s education in planning for and living a responsible, self-fulfilling life.
    • Develop appreciation for, and positive attitude toward, work.
    • Address the unique needs of limited English language students.
    • Address the unique needs of students experiencing frequent moves.
    • Enhance the school experience, personal and social development by involving families.
  • Remains readily available to students to provide support that will lead increased personal growth, self-understand and maturity.
  • Guides students in their participation in school and community activities.
  • Collaborates with staff and parents to best support students.
  • Takes an active role in interpreting the school’s objectives to students, parents and the community.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, high levels of motivation and enthusiasm when working with all learners.
  • Distributes items to students in-need i.e. food, school supplies, etc.
  • Establishes rapport and remains focused on student needs to maximize learning.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly environment.
  • Maintains established routine of the school and classroom procedures in which assigned.
  • Maintains a professional appearance as example to students. 
  • Remains at school the entire school day, unless otherwise instructed or listed in assigned position. 
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains reasonable rules of conduct which encourages self-discipline and responsibility.
  • Creates a sense of belonging and welcoming environment for all students and staff.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and times designated.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 
  • Possess either a valid license through the BoEE in school counseloring or social work.
  • Must be adaptable, collaborative, and an effective problem-solver.  
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Compensation: Long-term substitute rate $171.67/day
