Elementary School Building Principal

Reports to: Superintendent
Grade Level: Preschool - 4th grade

Jamestown is a picturesque island community surrounded by the waters of the Narragansett Bay and connected by bridges to Newport and to North Kingstown. Job Description & Responsibilities

1. Establishes and maintains a school mission, vision, and goals that set clear and measurable high expectations for all students, educators, and stakeholders.
2. Ensures the development of a comprehensive School Improvement Plan with annual student achievement targets, supported by parents, staff, and community members and aligned to the district goals.
3. Understands the use of Title I funds to provide supplementary educational services to students.
4. Experienced in the successful implementation of an efficient and effective Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports program for elementary aged students.
5. Experience in and working knowledge of Special Education, 504, and ELL processes and programming at an elementary level.
6. Experience and knowledge in being the LEA representative for Special Education meetings from referral through eligibility determination for elementary level students.
7. Understands the developmental needs and education of preschool students.
8. Continuously improves the school through effective planning and prioritizing, managing change, using research and best practices, monitoring progress, and allocating resources.
9. Develops a strong collaborative culture focused on student learning and the development of professional competencies, which leads to quality instruction.
10. Ensures implementation of effective, research-based instructional practices.
11. Collects and analyzes data regarding the needs and achievement of students.
12. Uses data to monitor the implementation of services and programs for Intervention and Special Education programs at the elementary level.
13. Solicits and maintains records of, and communicates appropriate information about, students’ behavior, learning needs, and academic progress.
14. Ensures the success of each student by collaborating with families and community members.
15. Ensures a productive learning environment that inspires and challenges students and staff.
16. Works toward a safe, supportive, collaborative culture by demonstrating respect for everyone, including other educators, students, parents, and other community members in all actions and interactions.
17. Develops and supervises appropriate procedures for the discipline, attendance, health, and safety of students.
18. Supervises all personnel assigned to the building, establishing clear expectations for role, responsibilities, and performance to ensure that all job responsibilities are met and exceeded.
19. Oversees the selection of elementary personnel and recommends appointments to the Superintendent.
20. Promotes and supports teacher leaders.
21. Strategically allocates fiscal resources to meet school-wide goals and to ensure student needs are met.
22. Collaborates with all district leadership on the continuous improvement of the school and implementation of all programming at the school for Special Education, Title I, and Multilingual learners.
23. Models strong leadership qualities and understands and participates in school, district, and state initiatives.
24. Complies with the policies established by the School Committee and acts as an agent for all building-level issues.
25. Works cooperatively with district administrators, informing them of practices and innovations at the school.
26. Engages meaningfully in professional development activities and remains current regarding the profession, such as trends, developments, and research as they relate to education and school operation.
27. Acts ethically and with integrity.
28. Performs all related duties as determined by the Superintendent.


1. Hold Rhode Island Elementary Principal certification or Building Level Administrator Certificate (12001); Master’s Degree
2. Previous experience as a building administrator is required
3. Minimum of five years of teaching experience, elementary teaching experience preferred.
