Mentors are critical partners in ensuring student success in navigating the virtual learning journey. The mentor, student, parent, and online instructor form a team to help students become proficient online learners and successfully complete their virtual courses. Mentors serve as the liaison between the student, online instructor, parents, and administration. The mentor provides that personal connection for students learning virtually: effective mentors work with the students every day, support them and build trusting relationships.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as an on-site point of contact for virtual teacher(s), students, and families.
  • Establish rapport with students and encourage academic success.
  • Establish virtual weekly office hours
  • Be available through email, phone, or zoom for student/parent support.
  • Help students get started and provide proactive instructional support.
  • Ensure student access to resources.
  • Maintain records of communication with students and parents and submit Personnel Activity Reports (PARs)
  • Monitor student attendance/participation
  • Monitor student progress weekly and help the student stay on track to complete the course successfully and on time.
  • Motivate students to complete course work.
  • Address any student or parent questions or concerns.
  • Communicate any issues to virtual teacher.
  • Communicate program withdrawals to Director of Curriculum.
  • Manage on-site lab setting to proctor tests (if applicable).
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Curriculum



Qualification Requirements:

  • Michigan Teacher Certification
  • 6-12 endorsement required Experience working with high school students
  • Is organized, efficient and flexible
  • Maintains confidentiality

Language Skills:

Candidate must be able to communicate effectively in a variety of media with Administrators, Teachers, Students, Parents, and any other member of the organization.


Reasoning Ability:

Candidate must be able to use higher order reasoning skills in order to solve problems and make decisions about increasing the achievement of students in the summer school program.


Other Skills and Abilities:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programming; ability to plan and implement differentiated lessons based on school expectations and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Must be able to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, colleagues, and parents.
