Job Description

GOAL: To use leadership, supervisory and administrative skills to promote the development of each student consistent with School Committee Policy. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • management of the building, grounds and equipment
  • communication ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION: 1. Administers and supervises the program, staff and building in accordance with School Committee Policies. 2. Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school. 3. Assists the Superintendent with the preparation and management of the school budget. 4. Maintains and controls the various local funds generated by student activities. 5. Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists, and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the school’s administration. 6. Supervises the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students. 7. Makes recommendations concerning the school’s program and needs. 8. Delegates authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal. IMPLEMENTATION OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION: 1. Implements approved programs to meet the specific needs of each student and the school. 2. Interprets program evaluations to students, staff and parents. 3. Provides leadership to staff in initiating and/or stimulating curriculum review and revision and assuming responsibility for school’s program. 4. Assists staff in addressing instructional problems as well as understanding the school’s role in resolving educational and/or social problems. 5. Allocates school time to provide for the efficient conduct of school instruction and business. 6. Supervises the school’s educational program. 7. Leads in the development, determination of appropriateness, and monitoring of the instructional program. 8. Programs/schedules classes within established guides to meet students needs. 9. Assists in the development, revisions, and evaluation of the curriculum. 10. Supervises and evaluates the school’s extracurricular program. 11. Supervises all activities and programs that are outgrowths of the school’s curriculum. 12. Supervises statewide assessment programs according to mandates. SUPERVISION / EVALUATION OF STAFF: 1. Supervises and evaluates both certified and non-certified staff members consistent with School Committee Policy. 2. Assigns all certified staff members to professional and other building duties; assigns non-certified staff to building duties. 3. Ensures that all staff members understand and implement School Committee approved regular and special programs. 4. Encourages the staff to be active in professional organizations. 5. Initiates professional development opportunities for teachers consistent with the school’s professional development plan. 6. Participates in the selection of school building personnel. 7. Supervises the school’s teaching process. 8. Develops the master teaching schedule and any special assignments. 9. Orients newly assigned staff members and assists in their development, as appropriate. 10. Evaluates and counsels all staff members regarding their individual and group performance. 11. Conducts meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school. 12. Conducts the in-service orientation and training of teachers, with special responsibility for staff administrative procedures and instructions. 13. Recommends according to established procedures, the removal of a teacher or staff members whose work is unsatisfactory. SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS: 1. Implements school wide rules and regulations as outlined in the School Committee policy and student handbook. 2. Assumes responsibility for the academic, physical, social and emotional components necessary for learning. 3. Maintains highs standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, according due process to the rights of students. 4. Establishes guides for proper student conduct and maintaining student discipline. MANAGEMENT OF THE BUILDING, GROUNDS, AND EQUIPMENT: 1. Secures necessary equipment for the educational programs within the confines of the school budget. 2. Monitors the inventory of all equipment and supplies. 3. Oversees the food service program in collaboration with the Business Manager. 4. Assumes responsibility for the safety and administration of the school plant and its grounds. 5. Provides for the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and nonacademic purposes. 6. Provides for the adequate inventories of property and for the security and accountability for that property. MANAGEMENT OF COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS: 1. Communicates effectively with students, staff, parents, community members and the School Committee. 2. Interprets and implements School Committee Policies. 3. Supervises the maintenance of all required records and reports. 4. Makes arrangements for staff/parent conferences when necessary. 5. Keeps the Superintendent informed of school’s activities and problems. 6. Attends school sponsored activities, functions and athletic events. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT/OTHER: 1. Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development, and participates in professional organizations. 2. Accepts committee and program assignments as requested by the Superintendent. 3. Keeps informed of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field. 4. Attends School Committee meetings as requested by the Superintendent. 5. Accepts other duties as requested by the Superintendent.

    Job Requirements

    • QUALIFICATIONS:
      1. Possession of certification of eligibility for Massachusetts State Department of Education.
      2. Minimum Masters Degree.
      3. Certificate of advanced graduate study preferred.
      4. Administrative/teaching experience with demonstrated skill in instructional leadership, curriculum development, and supervision of staff.
      5. Good interpersonal relationship with capability to communicate with staff, parents and community.
