Job Description

The One-to-One School Nurse or Nursing Assistant provides health services to a specific student in the Wayland Public Schools to implement a health care plan and provide routine and emergency care. The One-to-One School Nurse or Nursing Assistant also provides services as a special education teacher assistant. The Substitute One-to-One School Nurse or Nursing Assistant would be called in on an as-needed basis.

Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:
1.Provides all the student’s nursing services, administers prescribed medications, and ensures all medical needs are met, including personal care;
2. Maintains accurate records regarding student health issues and completes and files reports as required, to include recording all interventions, medications, and updating of the health care plan;
3.Assesses, evaluates, and refers student health issues, as appropriate, to parents and medical professionals by interacting tactfully and effectively to convey medical information when necessary to parents, school, departmental staff, supervisors, and officials;
4.Provides routine and emergency health care specific to the student within the scope of state laws and per medical orders;
5.Assumes responsibilities of special education teacher assistant for the student within the classroom environment, working with the student and staff towards meeting the goals of the student’s IEP;
6.Attends IEP and/or 504 meetings for the student;
7.Communicates frequently with student, parents, and department personnel, primarily through personal discussion involving routine to complex information;
8.Works independently to complete assigned tasks according to a prescribed time schedule, exercises good judgment and initiative, and refers more difficult issues or situations to the appropriate supervisor through consultation with school personnel, parents, and the Town’s School Nurse Leader, as appropriate.

Terms of Employment:
1.Works under the supervision of the school principal;
2.As necessary, may be required to work outside of normal school hours to accommodate school functions;
3.Salary commensurate with experience.

    Job Requirements

    • Minimum qualifications:
      1.Current certification in CPR and first aid;
      2.A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a school, pediatric, or comparable nursing setting;
      3.Medical knowledge relevant to scope of nursing or nursing assistant responsibilities, including familiarity with respiratory needs;
      4.Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, strong interpersonal skills, and ability work well a part of a team;
      5.Ability to maintain confidentiality of information;
      6.Experience and skill in maintaining complete and accurate records;
      7.Ability to work under typical elementary school conditions with normal interruptions during the day from staff, students, and parents;
      8.Appreciation and joy of working with children.
