Job Description

DEFINITION: Reporting to the Lead Teacher or assigned administrator, the High School Chemistry Teacher’s role is to help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able and responsible men and women.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed.   • Teaches district approved curriculum; prepares lesson plans accordingly; plans and teaches problem solving approaches to science instruction.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and --in harmony with the goals--establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in pedagogy and technical improvement in textbooks, teaching materials, and assessment strategies.
  • Brings concerns of learning problems of students to the Coordinator of Special Education.
  • Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
  • Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.
  • Keeps current in discipline and teaching techniques.
  • Maintains classroom discipline; maintains attendance, grades and other records.
  • Any other relative teaching duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises the classroom, students and assigned paraprofessional.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Master’s Degree preferred; Bachelor’s Degree in area of major study is required with a minimum of five years teaching experience, preferably in a vocational high school setting; or any combination of education and work experience. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid Massachusetts License from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, in the area of study is required. SKILLS AND ABILITY: (If applicable to instructional area.)

    LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; ability to effectively prepare lesson plans in accordance with district curriculum and the state Curriculum Frameworks. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents, teachers, and the general public.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plan and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. REASONING ABILITY: Must possess the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

    OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to the instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; ability to work effectively with all staff at all levels of the school district; skills in oral and written communication is required.
