Job Description

Elementary School Nurse for the 2020-2021 School Year

•A baccalaureate degree and a valid license as registered nurse in Commonwealth of Massachusetts;
•Hold or be eligible for Massachusetts Department of Education certification as a school nurse;
•Experience working with children and adolescents;
•Three years experience in the practice of nursing;
•CPR certified; and
•Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by course work, educational experience, school-level involvement and/or system wide professional activities, and the interview process.

•Maintain health records, including immunizations, history, physicals, and screening programs;
•Consult with students, parents, and school personnel, and plan action for eliminating, minimizing, or accepting health problems;
•Assist in the identification and education of students with special health problems which affect learning and total growth through medical screening programs;
•Promote programs for the prevention and control of disease and implement policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious disease;
•Support health services with health education and other phases of the total education program;
•Coordinate school health services with community health programs;
•Recommend modifications of facilities to maintain optimum health, sanitary and safety of students and school personnel;
•Administer first aid and provide emergency care in cases of injury or sudden illness; keep a daily log;
•Assess pertinent family history and home situation factors related to health/medical needs;
•Develop a nursing care plan for each student with a special health care need requiring nursing intervention;
•Serve as a member (at the request of the principal) of the IEP Team and IST, and part of a team in response to health problems such as child neglect and abuse, substance use and abuse, human nutrition, and adolescent pregnancy;
•Provide selected health service for school personnel;
•Provide in-service training for teachers in health and safety matters including first aid, epi-pen training, CPR and Heimlich maneuver;
•Conduct research and evaluate school health services;
•Promote professional improvement by participating in training on current techniques of school nursing and overall skill attainment within the profession;
•Assume other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the building principal or Director of Student Services;
•Review student health procedures annually;
•Assist physician in sports physicals; take part in immunization clinics;
•Take part in the decision for sick child dismissal and re-admittance to school;
•Measure height and weight; postural, vision and hearing screening;
•Monitor attendance/absence patterns; follow-up on student injuries and illness;
•Assist in the budget for school health needs; and
•Perform other duties assigned by Superintendent of Schools or designee.
