Reports to:Middle-High School Principal

Job Goal:
To develop in each student an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of vocal or instrumental music expression; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of music; and to develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music in accordance with the Massachusetts frameworks.

Qualifications:
1.Must meet all licensure and highly qualified requirements as set forth by the Massachusetts Department of Education.
2.Prior successful classroom work experience as a Music Teacher.

Performance Responsibilities:
1.Knowledge of and the ability to implement the MA curriculum standards for music (singing, reading and notation, playing instruments, improvisation and composition, and critical response) for grades 6-12 according to the district curriculum.
2.Designs effective and rigorous standards-based units of instruction consisting of well-structured lessons with measurable outcomes.
3.Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within allotted time.
4.Uses repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are engaging and appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
5.Participates in the selection of instructional materials, instructional aids, instructional supplies and instruments; controls the storage and use of school-owned property.
6.Uses instructional practices that reflect high expectations regarding content and quality of effort and work.
7.Engages all students and personalizes instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles, needs, interests, and levels of readiness.
8.Uses a variety of informal and formal methods of assessments to measure student learning, growth, and understanding.
9.Analyzes data from assessments and draws conclusions used to develop differentiated and enhanced learning experiences to meet the needs of all students.
10.Evaluates student progress, musical growth and performance utilizing school wide rubrics.
11.Creates and maintains appropriate standards of behavior, mutual respect and safety to provide a collaborative learning environment during class, practice, group rehearsals and musical performance that motivates students to take academic risks, challenge themselves, and claim ownership of their learning.
12.Actively creates and maintains an environment in which students’ diverse backgrounds, identities, strengths, and challenges are respected.
13.Collaborates and engages with families regularly about student learning, performance and strategies for supporting student learning and development both at home and at school.
14.Demonstrates the capacity to reflect on and improve the educator’s own practice, using informal means as well as collaboratively with staff, to gather information, analyze data, examine issues, set meaningful goals, and develop new approaches in order to improve teaching and learning.
15.Maintains professional competence through in-service days and learning opportunities by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities to improve quality of practice.
16.Collaborates and shares responsibility with colleagues to implement goals and initiatives of the school and district.
17.Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
18.Meet professional obligations with respect to punctuality, attendance and routine duties.
19.Plans, rehearses, and directs students in musical programs for school and community events.
20.Cooperates with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions.
