Job Description

TITLE:                                Special Education Paraeducator - Lakewood Elementary (2 Positions Available)
1.    Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed.

REPORTS TO:      Assigned Teacher
JOB GOAL:     To provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which
students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.

  • Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Commits to ongoing professional growth to support the unique needs of individual students.
  • Assists with accurate data collection.
  • Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
  • Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Assists with wash-up and toilet routines.
  • Assists with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines.
  • Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in such other forms of oral communication with students.
  • Assists with such large group and small group activities.
  • Assists with the supervision of the students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  • Guides independent work, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
  • Maximizes use of time throughout the day.
  • Implements behavior support plan.
  • Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
  • Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  • Supports Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) for all students in all settings.
  • Demonstrates collaborative skills in a team environment.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills.
  • Supports generalization of skills in an integrated setting.
  • Assists the teacher in devising strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities.
