Optional Substitute Orientation is August 8 at 10:00 am at the Learning Resource Center, 3550 Mills Civic Parkway, WDM.  Please email Jackie at if you plan on attending.

  2. Current Iowa License (teaching, substitute teaching or substitute authorization)
  3. Mandatory Reporters of Child Certificate (After initial training, refresher course required every three years).  Taken through the Department of Human Services or Heartland AEA.
  4. Mandatory Reporters of Dependent Adult Abuse Certificate (After intital training, refresher course required every three years).  Taken through the Department of Human Services or Heartland AEA.
  5. Right to Know Certificate (Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace).  Taken through Heartland AEA, no charge with our district password.
  6. Copy of official transcript

Substitute Teacher/Nurse $140/day
Minimum $70/day
Extended (16th day, retroactive; BA Level I per diem) $183/day

For more than a full semester in the same assignment there will be the following fringe benefits:

  • 50 percent of single hospital/major medical
  • $10,000 term life insurance
  • Five paid sick days
  • Three days leave for death in immediate family
  • Three paid days leave for critical illness in the immediate family or critical business/emergency
Substitute teachers and nurses are not entitled to and shall not receive a continuing employment contract pursuant to Iowa Code Section 279.15.
