Job Description

MISSION: The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will improve outcomes for all public-school students in the state by providing leadership, guidance, and support to school systems.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The School Improvement Policy Specialist will perform highly advanced consultative services and technical assistance work related to federal and state policy, legislative requests and TEA guidance. The position includes supporting districts through state intervention and submission requirements, as well as building capacity in key district stakeholders. The policy specialist will also be responsible for coordinating with the Office of Educator Support to align support for districts identified in need of intensive improvement. The position will also provide internal and external training and guidance resources to support stakeholders.

The position works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment for supporting improved student outcomes. This position reports to the Assistant Director of School Improvement Strategy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Analyzes new legislation and develops recommendations to division leadership on necessary revisions to the Texas Administrative Code. Coordinates agency rule making process and finalizes division rule packet.
Develops and oversees division process for bill analysis and prepares school improvement leadership for legislative hearings during legislative term.
Coordinates the collection, organization and preparation of materials for cross-agency communication for the purposes of alignment of support for districts and campuses in need of improvement.
Design, deliver and support high-quality trainings related to building capacity in key district stakeholders to support campus improvement.
Communicate and influence district leaders by providing effective feedback related to district targeted improvement plans that result in taking action toward school improvement.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: At least four (4) years of experience in programmatic, leadership, supervisory or administrative roles working in school districts, education service centers, university settings and/or statewide initiatives.

Substitutions: An advanced degree may substitute for two years of required experience.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have a valid certification in an area of public education
Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to produce high quality work in a dynamic environment
Highly organized; ability to manage multiple projects at once and meet deadlines
Experience coordinating projects, resources, and programs
Must possess outstanding leadership and personal relations skills
The ability to translate knowledge and information into effective messaging
Excellent oral and written communication skills
A desire to self-reflect, give/receive feedback and continuously improve
