Job Description

The SAIL Program is an educational summer program for students grades PK - 12th located at Old Rochester Regional High School. The program runs from Tuesday through Thursday from 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. for six weeks during the summer.

The School Nurse is responsible for the implementation of the School Health Services. In addition, a school nurse who is assigned to a school reports to the program directors. The School Nurse functions under the pertinent Massachusetts State Health Regulations, the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health School Health Unit, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Requirements and local School Committee philosophy and policy. Physical requirements of the school nurse include the ability to see, hear, bend, walk (without aid of mobility devices), and potentially push, pull or lift, 50 pounds.

• Assesses and evaluates the students’ health and makes necessary recommendations.
• Provides First Aid and Emergency care in case of injury or sudden illness for students, staff, and visitors.
• Manages chronic disease in conjunction with physician’s orders and / or standards of nursing within the nurse’s scope of
• Administers medication and treatments in accordance with physician’s orders.
• Provides care to students utilizing medical technology including but not limited to insulin pumps, tracheostomies, and G-tubes.
• Identifies students at risk for health issues such as alcohol and substance abuse, bullying, mental health issues, teen pregnancy,
neglect, and child abuse in accordance with school and state policies.
• Collects, maintains and disseminates health forms and records.
• Conducts a Life Threatening Allergy training for the staff prior to the beginning of the program.
• Advises on modification of student programs to meet the health and medical needs of individual students. Implements 504 plans
according to IDEA and/ or IHCP.
• Serves as a liaison between doctors, hospitals, students, families, and staff.
• Consults with teachers regarding student health concerns.
• Uses technology effectively to record student and staff information and communicate in a timely manner.
• Collects and analyzes data regarding Health Office visits and other data as required.
• Other nursing duties could be assigned as appropriate
