The James Otis is a small elementary school in the hear of East Boston. We are comprised of a collegial group of diverse educators who are energized to guide students in building the knowledge, skills, and talents to engage with and transform students' world. Learning at the Otis is grounded in the deep knowledge and experiences that each child brings through his/her own identity to the classroom and enriched by the Arts. Students will need to have an Educator who can broaden their understanding of the world around them and develop the skills required to effectively ask and answer their own questions and to think critically and creatively about what they are learning and experiencing. We aspire for all Otis students to be independent learners who will be prepared to pursue their interests and passions to be effective agents of change for themselves, their families, their communities, & the nation.

The James Otis Elementary School is seeking a dynamic grade 4 ELA inclusion teacher. The position entails teaching in a full inclusion classroom with general education students, ELLs and students with disabilities. The teaching model requires deep knowledge of the ELA standards as this position is departmentalized. We are looking for teachers who are collaborative as we meet weekly to plan lessons at grade level meetings. The candidate must plan and engage with families multiple times throughout the year to discuss student progress and data. The candidate must have an Elementary 1-6 license as well as their Moderate Disabilities license. An ESL license is also preferred.

REPORTS TO:  Principal/Headmaster

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach: General Science in an SEI setting
  • Creatively provide an interdisciplinary course of study that incorporates state curricular frameworks that demonstrates an understanding of the nature of science and how to develop this understanding in all students.
  • Implement district learning goals and objectives using appropriate curriculum as identified by district Science Department.
  • Implement research-based district curriculum that challenges students to use scientific inquiry in their learning of science concepts.
  • Develop students' capacity to see science as a way of thinking and investigating.
  • Administer district mid-year and end-of-year assessments in accordance with district guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS--REQUIRED:

  1. Education:  Hold a Bachelor's degree
  2. Hold a Massachusetts Teaching License in General Science at the appropriate grade level AND either SEI Endorsement OR dual certification in ESL.
  3. Meet all state and federal guidelines in order to be fully licensed and Highly Qualified.
  4. Ability to meet the Standards of Effective Teaching established by the Boston Public Schools as outlined above.
  5. Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS--PREFERRED:

  1. Experience teaching in urban schools.
  2. Degree in relevant science field and/or Education
  3. BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.
  4. In order to best serve all students, BPS prefers all core content teachers to be certified in their subject area and one or both of the following: Moderate Disabilities, English as a Second Language (at the appropriate grade level(s)).
