Job Description

The Special Education Teacher of the Skills Improvement Program (SKIP) provides services to students in a program which is a combination of directed teaching, supported inclusion, small group activities, and incidental teaching. The goal of the program is for students to increase their independent skills in all areas, including academics, social, communication, self-care, behavior/emotion regulation, as well as the generalization of these skills to new situations and environments. The SKIP program is a specialized, intensive program that serves students who have difficulties with emotional and behavioral regulation. The program consists of a special education teacher, a social worker, supporting instructional assistants, and consultation from a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, speech and language pathologist, and occupational therapist.

Performance Responsibilities:
1. Provides small group or individualized instruction and/or academic support according to the Wayland Public Schools’ curriculum as well as general and specific goals outlined in students’ individualized education plans within mainstream or pull-out setting.
2. Modifies and adapts the curriculum, materials, and physical environment to meet the needs of individual students;
3. Administers standardized academic achievement assessments for initial referrals and reevaluation purposes;
4. Participates in Team meetings for students in the program or newly referred and serves as Team chairperson;
5. Prepares progress reports, annual review narratives, and individual education plans;
6. In collaboration with the social worker, communicates with families and outside service providers;
7. Assumes such other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Student Services or Principal.

    Job Requirements

    • Minimum qualifications:
      1. Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree with emphasis on special needs preferred;
      2. Massachusetts certification as Teacher of School Age Children with Moderate and/or Intensive Special Needs;
      3. Experience working with students with behavioral and emotional challenges;
      4. Strong knowledge of positive behavioral support interventions and curricula, such as Collaborative Problem Solving, Crisis Prevention Intervention, and Zones of Regulation;
      5. Expertise in designing and implementing skills-based special education program;
      6. Experience with direct instruction/directed teaching in a small group setting;
      7. Experience with creating individual programs for academics, social skills, and positive support plans;
      8. Experience with organizing and overseeing reverse inclusion programs and inclusion opportunities;
      9. Possess those personal characteristics necessary to carry out the responsibilities of the position.
