Job Description

The Assistant Principal/Curriculum Director will manage the academic instructional programming and practices. This position will guide vision planning, implementation and MDS’s alignment to Common Core and Massachusetts frameworks.

Job Description:
Reporting directly to the Principal, the Assistant Principal/Curriculum Director partners with the Principal to oversee academic instruction across the school in a therapeutic environment.


  • Coaches and supports academic staff in the areas of curriculum, classroom management, instruction, and teaching best practices; guides the academic team’s work and ensures it is aligned with school goals
  • Serves as a leader, active advisor, and partner to teachers, school leadership, and all team members
  • Collaborates with the Therapeutic Staff and Specialists to promote & consistently ensure the success of Universal Practices/Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports throughout the school
  • Demonstrates exceptional organizational skills, modeling for others to be successful in these areas; information systems, documentation, etc.
  • Actively identifies areas of success and improvements with a solutions/growth mindset; brings new ideas and approaches to the Principal and takes initiative to support the team in these areas
  • Fosters positive environment and relationships; creates opportunities for teachers and academic specialists to learn together and from one another
  • Demonstrates flexibility, resilience, and follow-through while successfully addressing priorities
  • Assists in making informed school decisions
  • Promotes the use of technology in teaching/learning practices
  • Remains current and knowledgeable about best and innovative instructional practice and cultivates a professional culture of shared ownership for student learning in the school
  • Leads effective data-based inquiry to drive curriculum decisions
  • Provides in-service training for Teachers and School Staff. Responsible for setting up new teachers for success through curriculum planning, coaching, and in-classroom support during the onboarding period and as needed throughout the school year
  • Responsible for documenting in-class observations/evaluations for performance reviews of assigned staff and to assist the Principal in evaluating teacher performance
  • Partner with various team members to maintain tracking of supplies, textbooks, and academic equipment (Project Coordinator, IT Manager, AT Coordinator, Reading Specialists, etc.)
  • Consistently and successfully implements plans assigned by the Principal, and uses sound discretion to make decisions
  • Other duties as assigned by Principal
- Master’s Degree in Special Education or Education
- Minimum 5-7 years of teaching experience, including special education
- Related leadership experience
Active Massachusetts Licensure in one or more of the following areas:
- Required: Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8) and/or (5-12) Professional Licensure
- Preferred: Principal/Assistant Principal (PreK-8) and/or (5-12) Licensure
