Job Description

Beacon Academy, the only school of its kind in the country, seeks an experienced teacher of mathematics to start in July 2020. Our mission is to prepare urban students for independent high schools in the New England area through an additional year of school between 8th and 9th grades. This work is not easy, and we are looking for a dedicated, hard-working, experienced, top-notch team player devoted to justice to join us. This position is full-time and will report to the Director of Studies.

JOB SUMMARY

The Math Teacher is responsible for planning and teaching two sections of Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and/or Geometry to Beacon students, depending on student mastery and academic needs. This will include identifying areas of remediation, adjusting curriculum to meet student needs, and communicating with advisors and families about student progress. Additional responsibilities include managing weekly math tutors, overseeing the incoming and outgoing financial aid process, serving as the registrar, advising a small group of students, and supporting the day-to-day operations of the school in a variety of ways.

Priority consideration will be given to candidates who can demonstrate:

• Demonstrable success and experience in mathematics instruction.
• Familiarity with the independent school landscape.
• Experience or interest in working with low-income populations.
• Experience working as part of a highly collaborative team in which every member of the group invests in the success of the entire school.
• Commitment to building partnerships with fourteen- and fifteen-year-old urban students and their families, providing a strong role model and mentor for academic and personal work ethic and accomplishment.
• Sense of urgency regarding the transformative opportunity Beacon Academy represents for each student and willingness to demand the highest standards from all students.
• A sense of humor, flexibility, and willingness to go above and beyond.

Beacon Academy seeks teachers who are idealistic, energetic, hard-working, and filled with dedication and hope. We educate students who have curious minds and an open attitude towards life, academics, and new experiences; take responsibility for their actions and schoolwork; exhibit a willingness to think about life and speak up; display a commitment to classroom dynamics and extracurricular activities; recognize this tremendous opportunity and have the dedication to make the most of it.

Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest, resume, and the names of three references to Anne-Marie Yu-Phelps, Director of Studies, at: jobs@beaconacademy.org
