Job Description

The candidate will be responsible for teaching five visual art classes per day.

The successful candidate will:
• Plan and implement the Visual Arts curriculum for grades 1-3
• Evaluate individual students using department-developed common assessment tools, maintain up-to-date records of student progress, and report scores to department liaison by posted deadlines
• Assist in the collection and display of student art work for the annual district art show
• Collaborate with members of the K-12 Department of Visual Arts to review, develop and execute a rigorous district curriculum aligned to state standards
• Create a positive, inviting, and safe learning environment while modeling enthusiasm for learning
• Develop, model, and practice class procedures and routines
• Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities and practices to meet individual student needs
• Communicate high expectations to all learners, as well as realistic and consistent expectations for student behavior and applies appropriate consequences
• Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students’ work for the school and the community and to secure artwork for display in our annual art show in May

Teaching All Students
• Understanding of social emotional challenges facing elementary school students and an ability to assist students in developing appropriate coping strategies
• Provide direct support to students in a classroom by delivering instruction and ensuring learning through a variety of models and strategies
• Employ a variety of instructional strategies that consider individual learning styles and performance levels
• Ensure appropriate accommodations to the curriculum, lessons and learning environment (Instruction can be provided within the regular classroom setting, resource setting, or small classroom setting.)
• Design classroom activities and lessons with multiple levels so that all students can meet their IEP goals and access the curriculum.
• Formally and informally assess the student learning (rather than relying solely on standardized curriculum) to create a comprehensive learning program
• Set high expectations that are suitable based on student’s needs
• Create a classroom learning environment that is engaging, orderly, secure and appealing for students and in which mutual respect is practiced

Family and Community Engagement
• Build a partnership with families, encouraging their active participation in students’ learning
• Communicate student progress and development to parents/guardians

Professional Culture
• Ability to multi-task and communicate effectively to all staff regarding student status
• Work collaboratively with general education teachers, grade-level teams and other staff, to plan, share student work and ensure that instruction is aligned with identified curriculum and standards.
• Carry out the school's disciplinary code and procedures in a fair and just manner
• Participate in IEP and 504 meetings as required
• Attend staff, team, and department meetings as well as serve on staff committees as necessary
• Collaborate with colleagues to improve curriculum and instructional effectiveness for all students.

    Job Requirements

    • DEGREE PREFERRED: Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree Preferred

      EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: Previous experience in an elementary school setting

      ADDITONAL REQUIREMENTS:
      • Current Massachusetts Teacher Certification in Visual Arts K-8
      • Knowledge of current best practices in art education
      • Excellent communication skills
      • Experience operating a kiln is a plus but not required
    • Citizenship, residency or work visa required
