MIDDLE SCHOOL SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER
Under the direction of the Director of Academic Services and the Director of the Middle School, the special education teacher plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students with different abilities in a variety of educational settings.

ESSENTIAL TASKS
  • Serve as a member of a dynamic, interdisciplinary, middle school team.
  • Teach a daily, self contained, small math class focusing on remediation.
  • Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in both “push in” and “pull out” models of instruction for students with IEPs as well as other students in need of academic support.
  • Employ educational strategies and techniques to improve the development of academic and cognitive skills.
  • Instruct students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques to reinforce learning and to meet students' varying needs and interests.
  • When necessary, modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities.
  • Meet with parents to discuss their children's progress and to determine priorities for their children.
  • Confer with parents, teachers, administrators, sending districts, and other professionals to develop individualized education programs (IEPs).
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records.
  • Develop plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow-up of students in the classroom and small group settings.
  • Assist in the collection of data for providing progress monitoring and assessment of academic skills.
  • Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development activities, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities.
  • Actively participate in all department and staff meetings.
  • Act as student advocate when there are:
    a) transition issues which must be communicated to advisors and teaching staff,
    b) academic concerns, and/or
    c) accommodations for the student and/or modifications of the program to provide support for the student who requires additional assistance in order to succeed or to be challenged in his/her courses.
  • Act as teacher consultant, including writing summaries of student needs, distributing the summaries to teachers, educating teachers about student needs and special education terminology, providing mentorship around instructing supports for students on caseloads.
  • Provide students with executive functioning support through individual, small group, and full class settings.
  • Perform related work as required (i.e. general staff duties such as: Lunch duty, Opening school one day a week, etc.).

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of: the necessary principles and application of theory into practice for effective instruction and positive behavioral supports that are beneficial for implementation with all students with disabilities. The special educator also demonstrates an understanding of the federal, state, and local mandates governing the determination and delivery of special education services; displays the ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, families and the sending district, students, and community members.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Requires a Bachelor’s Degree. Must be eligible or possess a valid Special Education Professional License from the State of Vermont.
