Available Immediately - 2 hours per day, Monday - Friday.  $17 per hour 

Description: The Needham Science Center's mission is to serve as a state-of-the art resource for elementary students & teachers that inspires teaching and learning about the natural and engineered world. The Science Center provides live animals, kits, materials, professional development, programs and fieldtrips to teachers across the district. The Animal Caregiver provides care for a small but diverse live animal collection in the Science Center animal room.

Job Summary:

Essential Functions and Duties of the Position

The essential functions and duties listed below are intended as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
  • Prepare food (salads, mice, live insects, etc) for live animal collection as needed

  • Develop a rotating schedule for animal room and animal cage upkeep and cleaning - dishwasher use for animal dishes

  • Feed live animal collection following the determined daily schedule

  • Observe animal collection for general health & changes in behavior - contact Director should a problem with live animal occur

  • Administer medications if necessary to ill animals

  • Monitor food stocks and other supplies

  • Launder the animal towels in Science Center washer/dryer

  • Supervise student volunteers in animal room and train weekend animal care volunteers 

  • Occasionally collaborate with science center staff and interact with special education staff, students and volunteers
  • Occasionally shop at grocery or pet supply store for animal food and supply items

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities

  • Comfortable handling live animals, including some exotics and insects(including cockroaches)

  • Basic knowledge of animal care

  • Organization skills and time management skills maintain animal room upkeep - follow schedules

  • Ability to interact positively with students and adults

  • Willing to learn and follow the NPS animal policies, town and state requirements for working with live animals

  • Ability able to work washer, dryer, dishwasher and dog sink 
  • Documentation of having received a recent tetanus shot
  • Free of allergies to animals, bedding and animal food sources
  • Ability to to lift 50 lbs.

The animal room is located at the Science Center in Newman School. The position runs from August to June and requires 2-hours per day - Monday – Friday in the afternoon. $17 an hour.
