POSITION: District Library Media Specialist    Probationary / Permanent

 

LOCATION:  Jefferson County School District

SALARY: $39,855.00 – $78,234.00     (Salary will reflect remaining contract days)       (Full Benefits)

 

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

  • School leader who collaborates with administration and school staff to support library, school, and district initiatives, and supervises all school libraries within the district.
  • Integrates information and emerging technologies to shape learning and instruction.
  • Supports staff with curriculum development through the use of library and on-line resources.
  • Maintains a cooperative attitude with staff, parents, and students.
  • Supervises and develops lessons for library assistants.
  • Create and/or Coordinate School-wide or Community Programs to Support Students and Families, including; Summer Library Programs, Motivational Literacy Programs Coordination (Oregon Battle of Books, Gift of Literacy, Family Literacy Back-Packs, Author Visits, Book Fairs, etc.)
  • Engages in a variety of activities to create programs that support students and families, evaluates intended outcomes of programs created.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Not Necessarily Limited to)

 

Learner Development, Learning Differences, and Learning Environment

  • Maintains school libraries as a teaching and learning environment that are inviting, safe, and flexible, accessible, and conducive to student learning.
  • Creates a library/classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity interest, and abilities of students: An environment in which students are actively engaged and show respect for one another and for the teacher.
  • Establishes and enforces rules for behavior, and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.
  • Provides for the health and safety of all students in all instructional settings.
  • Develops a program of study that meets individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Exhibits a personal interest and encourages student interest in reading.

Content Knowledge & Application

  • Establishes policies and procedures for selection, acquisition circulation, resource sharing, and weeding of the materials collection (both print and digital) to ensure that it is culturally relevant, up-to-date, in excellent condition, and accessible to the school community.
  • Supervises school library/media specialists in all district schools in collaboration with school administrators.
  • Knowledge of CCSS, AASL, and ISTE standards.
  • Plans and manages programming and events to support the library, school, and district goals and objectives.
  • Develops and administers library budgets aligned to library, school, and district goals and objectives.
  • Maintains a system of asset management, which includes frequent communication to students and parents regarding late books, lost books, and fines.
  • Manages digital subscriptions and resources that align with curriculum and learning targets across the content areas.
  • Develops and Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to use research-based principles of effective instruction.
  • Organizes instruction using learning objectives, with clearly defined student outcomes that are recognizable to the student and other observers.
  • Prepares effectively for instruction through daily lesson planning, with instruction based on District protocol and standards.
  • Networks with other libraries, librarians, and agencies to provide access to resources outside of the schools.
  • Acts as an instructional leader in the area of literacy.

Instructional Practice

  • Provides professional development opportunities within the district and schools.
  • Provides guidance in the understanding and practices around copyright, fair use and licensing of intellectual property.
  • Engages the school community in issues around safe, ethical, and responsible digital citizenship.
  • Communicates with all stakeholders about new materials, equipment, and services through emails, newsletters, web pages, and other means of communication.
  • Managers reading programs such as Oregon Battle of the Books, Gift of Literacy, author visits, book fairs, book clubs, summer library programs, etc.
  • Creates reading lists, delivers book talks and creates other promotional opportunities to highlight library resources.
  • Strives by instruction and action to employ the District’s philosophy of education, District curricula, and research based programs, instructional goals and objectives, performance expectations and instructional collaboration.
  • Provides a variety of situational appropriate instructional strategies and methods.
  • Select teaching strategies emphasizing student engagement.
  • Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement
  • Develops lesson plans, and assigns appropriate instructional responsibilities to educational assistants.
  • Collaborate with principal and instructional coach on training needed for educational assistants.

Professional Responsibility                                                                              

  • Maintain an ongoing personal program of professional growth and development.
    • Be open to working collaboratively with principal and instructional coaches, and to welcome feedback.
    • Participate in District sponsored in-service offering appropriate to assignment.
  • Develop and maintain positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Maintain a cooperative relationship with administration, coaches, consultants, staff, students, and parents.
  • Participates cooperatively on school, community, and District-wide activities.
  • Ensure that materials and equipment are properly used, maintained, and stored, and that inventory records are accurate and correct.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have Oregon teaching license with a Library Media Specialist Endorsement
  • A Required, M.A. Preferred
  • Successful classroom teaching/Librarian experience.
  • Knowledge of literature across the grade levels, genres, and content areas.
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching practices and culturally relevant materials selection.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work positively and cooperatively with others.
  • Knowledge of and experience with effective instruction and assessment.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to ongoing educational/continuing professional development.
