The Learning Community, an innovative K-8 public charter school in Central Falls, RI, seek a Data & Research AmeriCorp
  • VISTA member. The goal of the VISTA project is to support the school by using data and data systems to inform student performance improvements as well as researching and studying systems that will advance the data systems that are in place. The Data & Research VISTA member will begin in January of 2020.

    The Learning Community, with an 84% poverty rate, 37% English language learners and high student achievement, is proving that poverty is not a barrier to success.   • VISTA Roles

    This project will strengthen The Learning Community by (1) improving The Learning Community’s schoolwide decision-making, advance student achievement, and communicate effectively about school performance, and (2) improving the effectiveness of The Learning Community’s partnerships with schools and districts. Major activities include:

    • Study and document the data systems and data—both qualitative and quantitative—used for decision-making at the child, classroom, grade, and school level.
    • Working with the data manager, assess team members’ priorities for improved access to data for decision-making.
    • Research best practices in school data systems nationally
    • Extract major findings that can be usefully shared with The Learning Community’s partner districts and schools.
    • Study The Learning Community’s approach to gathering and analyzing comparative data, ranging from performance on state standardized tests (overall and by demographic subgroups) to attendance rates to student retention rates. Propose changes, particularly in relation to incorporating the results of RICAS, the standardized state assessment.
    • Enter the latest school year data (2020 - 21) into the revised comparative tracking tools. Develop templates and document efficient protocols for this annual process, enabling a more resource-light process in future years.
