Job Purpose Statement:     Assist head coach and lead assigned high school athletic program (JV and/or Novice wrestling teams).   Lead in establishing an environment in which student/athletes can gain self-esteem and develop a positive self-image. Direct the promotion of sportsmanship, a winning attitude and commitment to student academic success. Assist the head wrestling coach while performing leadership to assigned athletic program, coaching duties as well as duties and responsibilities assigned by head varsity coach.


Essential Job Functions

  • Assist in the planning and organization of practice sessions during the regulated season; to include seasonal goals and objectives. 
  • Assists the Head Coach & Athletic Director in maintaining the care for athletic facilities and aid in preparation of the facilities for athletic competition. 
  • Assists Head Coach & Athletic Director in purchasing equipment, supplies and uniforms for the particular sport. 
  • Assists Head Coach & Athletic Director in game scheduling when needed, especially at the JV & Novice level. 
  • Assists in conducting pre-season meeting with all athletes and parents, outlining schedules, student athletic contracts, and Student Athletic Handbook. 
  • Works to improve skills and knowledge of each athlete and the team as a whole. 
  • Enforces appropriate team expectations and team discipline. 
  • Follows guidelines and principles of sportsmanship. 
  • Adheres to requirements of athletic eligibility. 
  • Adheres to District Athletic Handbook, Standard Operating Procedures of OSAA and league rules. 
  • Works harmoniously and cooperatively with high school Varsity & Assistant Coaches, community volunteers, parents, and school personnel. 
  • Communicates effectively (both orally and written) with students, parents, officials, and staff. 
  • Assists in submitting rosters, equipment and uniform inventories and other reports as required. 
  • Assists in coordination of end of year awards, communications, and events. 
  • Assists in monitoring expenditures in relation to budget and assists in monitoring proper use, care, and return of uniforms and other assigned equipment. 
  • Assists in supervising and/or arranging for proper supervision of student/athletes during practices, games, travel, and related activities. 
  • Assists in coordinating and is responsible of all media communications at the high school level 
  • Consults with Head Coach and Athletic Administration concerning playing conditions, safety concerns, program improvements, player performance, outside complaints, and other related matters. 
  • Attends and participates regularly in HRCSD Coach training opportunities. (Positive Coaching Alliance and Athletic Director led)

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

  • Skills possessed will exemplify a moral character that is consistent with being a positive role model for high school students.
  • Knowledge of the sport at the high school level (to include recent rule changes). Through cooperation and communication, assist in development of a system of play that can be effectively communicated with head coach to implement at the high school level. Know how to communicate effectively with athletes and parents.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others. To organize and manage students time effectively. To use problem solving strategies consistently. Adjusts to performing practices in a variety of indoor and outdoor locations.

Education Required: High School Diploma or equivalent. College Degree preferred.


License, Certifications, Bonding and/or Testing Required: Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance; district drug screening clearance and physical abilities assessment; Annual District mandatory trainings; NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Certification or ASEP Certifications; Concussion training, Heat Illness Prevention, Performance enhancing Drugs & Substances Training, First Aid/CPR Certification. Positive Coaching Alliance Double-Goal Coaching Certificate.


Experience Required:

  • Prior coaching experience preferred
  • Subject knowledge of wrestling
  • Ability to collaborate with youth programs, students, parents, the community, staff, and other HRVHS coaches
  • Ability to coach in collaboration with other wrestling coaches
  • Ability to teach skills and fundamentals
  • Willingness to coach after school, travel, and supervise students
  • Meet attendance requirements of the position
  • Possess current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Successful high school coaching experience preferred
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred
  • Successful fundraising experience
  • In school recruitment of athletes and team building

The 2019/20 season begins in November 2019.


The successful candidate may be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test and physical evaluation. 


The salary is based on 9.8% of the 2019/20 Licensed Salary Schedule, Column BA, Steps 1-8 and will be prorated based on assigned FTE %.  Step placement is determined by the Human Resources Department and is based on verified years of prior paid coaching experience in the same sport, at the same responsibility level.
