Job Description

Topsfield Elementary Schools
Title: Extended Studies Teacher: Grades 4-6 (.5FTE)
• Master’s degree or equivalent preferred
• Valid Massachusetts Elementary Teacher Professional License, Academically Advanced certification preferred
• Evidence of successful teaching at the elementary level especially with academically advanced students
• Demonstrate ability to individualize and make use of techniques for teaching the academically advanced
• Experience with the administration of tools that identify academically advanced students
• Strong communication skills
• Meets the DESE requirements to be considered a “Highly Qualified Teacher”
Reports to: Building Principal
Evaluated by: Building Principal and Director of Curriculum
Job Goal: To meet the needs of students who are academically advanced by providing advanced curriculum, enrichment units, instruction in process and effective growth experiences
Performance Responsibilities:
• Develop program objectives, enrichment units and process curricula for extended studies program
• Develop lesson plans, including activities and materials, and implement objectives through individual and small group activities
• Supervise the identification process of academically advanced children in the district
• Employ a variety of instructional techniques, strategies, and media, consistent with capabilities of the individuals or student group involved
• Monitor students’ progress, keep appropriate records, and prepare reports on a regular basis
• Serve as a resource person in gifted education for all district personnel
• Communicate with students, parents, regular classroom teachers and administrators through conferences and other means to discuss students’ progress and interpret the extended studies program
• Assist in scheduling academic modules
• Maintain professional competence through professional development activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities
• Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills
Work Year: 181 School Days + 2 Professional Development Days = 183 Days
