Job Description

The mission of the Christa McAuliffe Charter School is to cultivate within each member of a diverse student body an intense commitment to self and community, the courage and insight to set high standards for academic and personal success, and the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to achieve those standards.

The Christa McAuliffe Charter School is a diverse Expeditionary Learning school for 400 scholars in grades 6-8. Our hands-on curriculum inspires achievement through active learning, character growth, and teamwork.

McAuliffe is a community of engaged, motivated learners — students and adults alike. At McAuliffe, students take ownership of their learning, guided by creative, passionate adults who adeptly navigate the ever-present balancing act of challenge and support. A spirit of adventure pervades the school, and the energy is seemingly boundless. McAuliffe is the rare middle school where it really is ok to be yourself. The community values independence and individuality, while practicing collaboration, inclusivity, and acceptance.

Expeditionary Learning (EL) is a national school transformation organization operating in 165 schools in 30 states and reaching over 45,000 students. EL partners with schools to improve student achievement through an inquiry and project-based approach. EL schools inspire the motivation to learn, engage teachers and students in new levels of focus and effort, and transform schools into places where students and adults become leaders of their own learning. EL’s definition of student success combines academic achievement, character and high quality work. We believe that academic success is built on strong character qualities of collaboration, perseverance, responsibility and compassion, and that character is shaped through engaging and challenging academic work.

Position Overview
McAuliffe is seeking energetic and dependable individuals to fill open “Guest Teaching” positions for the 2018-2019 school year. A “Guest Teacher” is not your ordinary substitute.

With many teachers that participate in off-site professional development, there will be many opportunities to cover a variety of classes and for a variety of teachers. This is an incredible opportunity for a graduate student or recent education graduate who is looking for hands-on experience leading lessons in an Expeditionary Learning ( middle school.

We expect that our guest teachers will be excited for opportunities to gain teaching experience. Where in some schools it is acceptable for substitutes to sit behind a desk with minimal interactions with students, we expect guest teachers to be true teachers interacting with students and building relationships over time. Because of this in-house training experience, we hope that guest teachers will be in the first round of candidates for open teaching assistant or teaching positions in the school.

Student Support / Guest Teacher Paid Internship Opportunity:
If you are interested in spending an agreed upon number of full days per week (anywhere from 1 to 5 days) at the school during a trimester, please apply for the Support & Guest Teacher Internship. On days when guest teachers are needed, you’ll be the first person we call. On days when guest teachers are not needed, you’ll spend the day supporting students and teachers with a schedule of classes based on your interest in content area and age of student.

Responsibilities / Expectations
Respond promptly to emails or phone calls requesting your service for a day or series of days.
Facilitate lessons prepared by absent teacher; this includes interacting with and getting to know the curriculum and students.
Treat McAuliffe students with respect and encourage them to help you get to know the way things work at the school and in the classroom.
Give clear directions so that students know exactly what to do during the lesson; check in with students during the lesson.
Implement classroom management techniques (you’ll be oriented to these prior to beginning your work at McAuliffe).
Keep notes for the absent teacher and leave student work and other materials in an organized way.
Ask questions and ask for help.
Sign up to cover classes frequently.

Student teaching or substitute teaching experience in a middle school or high school.
Interest in teaching classes, not just sitting behind a desk reading a newspaper.
Dependable: if you sign up to cover for a teacher, we expect that you will show up on time and be there for the full day.
Strong communication skills and prompt responses to phone calls and email.
Enjoys middle school age students.
Strong behavior management skills including a balance of firmness, warmth, and humor.
Ability to “think on your feet” and have fun doing it.
Desire to connect with a community of educators who may want to hire you as a teacher in the future.

NOTE: Guest Teachers who are not responsive or who do not follow through with stated expectations will not be invited back to the school to cover more classes. Those who are exemplary, may be invited to apply for open teaching or teaching assistant positions.
