Job Description

Purpose: The school based speech pathologist provides diagnostic, remedial, and consultative services for children with communicative disorders; performs as support staff member in school to determine specific needs of children who display speech, language, and hearing difficulties.

Supervisor: Pupil Support Services Director, Building Administrators

Role: The role of speech therapists in schools is to assess the individual needs of students and design programs to best aid students with language and speech problems.

    Job Requirements

    • Primary Responsibilities

      • Administers, interprets, and provides written reports on standardized and informal assessments
      • Provides targeted, evidence-based therapeutic intervention to facilitate student participation and speech performance within the
      school environment.
      • Communicates and collaborates with other disciplines to ensure team understanding of student speech performance strengths
      and needs, through evaluation, educational program planning, and service delivery.
      • Uses data to inform instruction and design challenging, measurable, IEP goals and objectives
      • Participates in multidisciplinary meetings to review evaluation results, integrate findings with other disciplines, offer
      recommendations, and develop individual education plans and intervention plans to achieve IEP goals.
      • Knowledge of the federal, state, local legislation, regulations, policies and procedures that mandate and guide speech therapy
      practice in schools.
      • Monitors and reassess the effects of speech therapy intervention and the need to continue, modify, or discontinue intervention.
      • Supervises and evaluates the treatment plans and services provided by Certified Speech Therapy Assistants (SLPA)
      • Assists teachers and students in the use of augmentative technology and other equipment and devices designed to increase
      student access and performance in classrooms and throughout the school environment
      • Documents speech therapy services to ensure accountability of service provision and to meet standards for reimbursement of
      services as appropriate.
