Position: Full-time School Nurse – Sacred Heart High School
Reports to: Head of Schooll – Sacred Heart High School

Position Overview:
The full-time School Nurse serves as a member of the faculty of Sacred Heart Elementary School and Early Childhood Center, and is responsible for developing and maintaining the school’s health policies and programs. The primary role is to promote health education and provide preventative health services to facilitate the physical, cognitive, emotional and social growth and development of all students. The School Nurse ensures that the school’s health policies and procedures are consistent with the mission of Sacred Heart School System, the Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence and the Catholic Schools Office of the Archdiocese of Boston. The School Nurse works collaboratively and communicates effectively with all members of the Sacred Heart School community in creating a school culture that is respectful, welcoming and engaging.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
• Responsible for the appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, and management of students’ health care needs.
• Provides medically prescribed interventions including medication administration and treatment to students, and handles minor health issues and illness on a daily basis.
• Provides first aid to students and to staff as needed.
• Collaborates with the parent/guardian and physician to develop and implement an Individual Health Care Plan as needed for students with acute and/or chronic health issues.
• Reviews and monitors student immunization records to ensure compliance with Department of Public Health requirements. Makes recommendations to school administration for exclusion of students due to non-compliance.
• Implements a communicable disease control program in school, including prevention and management procedures.
• Assists in coordinating student referrals, as appropriate, to other health care professionals and community resources.

• Provides health education and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions to achieve optimal levels of physical, cognitive, and social/emotional wellness.
• Provides education and information for the promotion and maintenance of health as well as the prevention of illness and injuries.
• Serves as a resource to school faculty members in health education and instruction and provides teachers with pertinent and wellness information on specific students.
• Reviews emergency health and safety procedures with faculty and staff on an annual basis.

• Consults with school administration to recommend the development, review, and revision of policies, procedures, and programs for assessing, improving, and maintaining student health.
• Maintains accurate and complete student health records as required by the Department of Public Health and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and prepares all written reports as required.
• Maintains an inventory of required health office supplies.
• Maintains and monitors the potassium iodide distribution policy of the school.
• Assists the school administration in the planning of emergency management policies and procedures.
• Monitors compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and policies related to school health services.
• Provides leadership in promoting health and safety, including a healthy environment.
• Provides health-related education to students and staff in individual and group settings and provides consultation to other school professionals, including food service personnel, physical education teachers, coaches, and counselors. Responsibilities in the provision of a safe and healthy school environment include the school nurse’s monitoring of immunizations, managing communicable diseases, assessing the school environment for safety to prevent injury and spearheading infection control measures. The school nurse is also a leader in the development of school safety plans to address bullying, school violence, and the full range of emergencies that may occur at school. (Wolfe, 2006. NASN.org)

• Works collaboratively with administration, faculty, parents, and students to promote and maintain an optimal level of health and wellness for students.

Qualifications and Experience:
• Licensed as a Registered Nurse
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing
• Licensed or eligible for licensing within one year of employment as a School Nurse by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
• Certified in First Aid and CPR
• Minimum of two years of experience in school health nursing, pediatric nursing, community/public health nursing or other relevant clinical nursing experience
• Demonstrated ability to work as a team member with administrators, teachers, parents, students, physicians and other healthcare professionals
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Must be willing to follow the Mission of the Sisters of Divine Providence and the Catholic Church
