Job Description

Organization Overview

Founded in 2003 to provide a free, public, high-quality college preparatory education for the students of East Boston and Chelsea, Excel is proving that children’s ability to succeed in high school, college, and beyond is not determined by zip code. We have grown from one school serving approximately 200 students to a network of four schools serving more than 1,300 students, and our purpose and theory of change remains consistent: we believe that when a student has the support and tools to pursue a productive post-secondary pathway aligned with personal identity and values, it can fundamentally change his/her life trajectory. As a true public school, Excel is defined not by whom we exclude but by whom we include in our community. We are proud of the fact that we serve many students with special needs.

After 8 years of operating a small single-site middle school in East Boston, Excel was designated a “Proven Provider” by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and granted two additional charters to serve middle school students. After four more successful years, Excel Academy Charter High School opened in 2015. In spring 2019, we are cheered on our first senior class as they became the first cohort to receive high school diplomas from Excel.

The Excel Fellow Role

Excel Teaching Fellows will function as members of the school-based instructional team at one of the network’s three middle school campuses. The role is a one-year commitment. Fellows will have the option to apply for a lead teacher role at an Excel school the following school year if they choose, but a permanent position is not guaranteed. School-based duties and responsibilities for Fellows include:

• Supporting instruction in the classroom of a host teacher;
• Teaching and developing curriculum for 1-2 elective courses (middle school);
• Providing targeted, individualized student support as needed;
• Providing regular coverage for absent teachers during instructional and non-instructional time;
• Serve as the leader of an activity during the school’s Enrichment program on Friday afternoons (Middle School);
• Co-lead a homeroom and serve as an advisor to a subset of students;
• Provide operational support as needed; and
• Do whatever it takes to ensure the mission of the school is upheld.

Additionally, each Fellow will be assigned a host teacher/coach. The host teacher is someone who teaches in the subject area that the Fellow is pursuing. This teacher’s classroom is the Fellow’s home base, although Fellows will have the opportunity to observe in other classrooms as well. In the spring, Fellows will complete their student teaching in the host teacher’s classroom. Fellows will be observed regularly and receive feedback on their teaching from both their host teacher and their coach (who may be the same person).
