SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION

The Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter School (PFSJCS) is a public high school in Holyoke, MA whose mission is to prepare students for college success while inspiring them to be active and effective citizens. We achieve educational excellence and social responsibility for all our students through high expectations and a rigorous academic and social justice curriculum. Our students graduate with strong intellectual and ethical foundations necessary for future leaders of a global society.

Small class sizes (normally 18 students or less per class)
Focus on social justice issues in the curriculum

Title 1 Teacher duties:
Teach 5, 48-minute periods per day.
Plan and delivering lessons that are engaging, social justice focused, often activity-based, and incorporate multiple learning styles and differentiation for all Title 1 student needs.
Prepare students to pass MCAS tests in the subjects and grades required.
Meet daily with a small group of advisees to guide through 3 or 4 years of schooling.
Collaborate with other faculty in delivery of appropriate instructional approaches and best practices, working to serve the various learning styles and needs of Title 1 students.
Implement curriculum and instruction in a manner consistent with PFSJCS mission statement.
Facilitate and mediate positive and restorative resolution of problems that might arise with students and/or parents.
Create and update Title 1 course curriculum maps, formative and summative assignments, and other documents
Provide meaningful feedback and opportunities for revision on Title 1 student work.
Regularly communicate with families about coursework and student progress
Perform other administrative duties, such as attending meeting, hall monitor or lunch duty.
Enforce all rules and expectations for students as outlined in our student handbook.
Identify and use all tools, supplies and equipment needed to successfully teach in the subject area.
Ensure compliance with all State and Federal Title 1 regulations, including reporting, progress reports and assessments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree in special education
Proof of passing Massachusetts MTEL subject area, communication and literacy tests
Possession of SEI endorsement for MA
Ability to run IEP meetings and write IEPs
Has a solid understanding of State and Federal special education regulations
Massachusetts licensure in Special Education Gr. 5-12 and subject of the position; i.e.
Reading, Math, etc
Demonstrated relevant work experience of a minimum of three years.
Ability to work with diverse populations
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students, parents, administrators, colleagues, community, and other school community staff.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor or Master Degree in Special Education or related field
Additional Certification and further education in subject area i.e. Math, Reading, etc. of the position
Education and/or experience in Social Justice, particularly the work of Paulo Freire
Demonstrated relevant special education teaching experience of 3-5 years.
Demonstrated relevant teaching experience in related subject area.
Demonstrated success in effectively solving challenging problems through a positive, collaborative approach.
