Job Description

The Worcester Public Schools is seeking a Guidance Counselor for New Citizen's Center (NCC). NCC Young Adult and NCC Secondary are programs for English Learners (ELs) who meet the criteria as students with Significantly Limited and/or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE). Students enrolled in NCC YA and NCC Secondary are SLIFE ELs with two or more years of educational gaps. The students receive instruction under a full day Sheltered English Immersion model.

As a teacher in the Worcester Public Schools you will be expected to provide rigorous instruction to the diverse population of students in your classroom. You will be expected to align your teaching to the district and state curriculum; to regularly assess students for learning comprehension and to modify your teaching to ensure that students are learning; to provide a classroom that is conducive to the learning needs of all students, especially students who are learning English and students with disabilities.

ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE:
This position is accountable for assuming the responsibility for delivering high quality instructional experience through creativity, resourcefulness and sound judgment consistent with the curriculum frameworks, standards and the rules and regulations of the Worcester Public Schools.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provide ALL students with access to comprehensive, data-driven, and evidence-based curriculum that specifically addresses the unique needs of the students.

2. Validate and continue to advance the efforts to develop more well-rounded individuals who will attain the necessary skills (academic/technical, workplace readiness and personal/social) to thrive in the workplace and in society.

3. Support high standards for ALL students by helping them to see the necessity and value of their education. Encourage and engage students in setting goals to continue their learning during and
after high school and work collaboratively with staff to build agency and self-advocacy the successful candidate will provide students with programs and assessments, which appropriately educate
and prepare them for post-secondary education / training and the workplace.

4. Implement evidence based interventions through data driven decisions and accountability for a unique population of students that will require individual intervention measures; personal/social, work
readiness and academic success.

5. Foster family and community engagement to ensure there is a viable link from school to home and within the community. Creating a culture where parents and the business community feel that they
are equal partners in students’ lives will provide the collaboration that is necessary for students to achieve.

6. Develop interventions that are designed for a smaller percentage of students who will need targeted responsive services that meet their individual needs. These are comprised of both direct
(delivered either individually or in a small group basis) and indirect services and will focus on needed competency development and support in areas identified through data analysis.

7. Provide short-term individual counseling to assist with transitions, time management, executive functioning (organization, decision-making, study skills, etc.)

8. Monitor high risk student academic and attendance issues through check-ins and meetings.

10.Performance of other job-related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Massachusetts DESE license in School Guidance 5-12
2. MA Degree


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ability to speak Albanian, Arabic, Nepali, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese, or an African Language
2. Experience teaching students who are English language learners
3. Demonstrated experience with second language acquisition.

Candidates who are licensed in another state will be considered if they qualify for the temporary license from DESE. Candidates will need to apply for and pay for the DESE license as a condition of employment.

WORK YEAR: 183 days. This position will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at NCC Young Adult and Tuesday and Thursday at NCC Secondary.
