Job Description

READS Collaborative is seeking a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist to provide direct services, consultation, and evaluations for students within READS Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program (based in Norton, MA) and Bristol-Plymouth Regional High School (Taunton, MA). The position provides flexibility for one's schedule with approximately 10 hours/month of direct treatment and consultative support. There may be opportunities for additional hours, dependent on additional contracts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Plan and implement specially designed instruction to meet the unique educational needs of students with visual impairments
• Conduct orientation and mobility assessments, identifying potential needs in this area
• Recommend environmental and instructional adjustments for the student in the classroom and school
• Instruct the visually impaired student in the development of skills and knowledge that enables him or her to navigate their environment independently, as appropriate for the individual’s age and developmental level
• Teach the visually impaired student to travel with proficiency, safety, and confidence in familiar and unfamiliar environments.
• Consult regularly with sighted peers, parents, classroom teachers, physical education teachers, and/or other special education personnel to assist in environmental modifications, adaptations, and considerations and to ensure reinforcement of appropriate orientation and mobility skills that will enable the student to travel independently in these settings.
• Prepare and utilize equipment and materials, for example, tactile maps, models, distance low vision devices, and long canes, for the development of O&M skills.
• Attend IEP Team meetings and provide input regarding progress and recommended next steps
• Author relevant sections of the IEP, and write progress reports

    • REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
      • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
      • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively with teachers and administrators to set high academic and instructional expectations

      EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
      • Current Massachusetts Certification, required
      • Three or more successful years of experience, preferred
      • Master’s Degree, preferred
    • At least 1 year of relevant experience preferred
    • Master degree preferred
    • Citizenship, residency or work visa required
