Job Description

Primary Purpose: Responsible for safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities on assigned route. Operate a school van that transports students with disabilities and other personnel to and from schools or designated locations. Support students in a classroom under the teacher’s licensure.

Qualifications: Education/Certification: Valid MA 7 D driver’s license.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintains emotional control. Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions; Pushing, pulling, moderate lifting; Work outside and inside; Moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes.

Special Knowledge/Skills:
• Must be 18 years of age
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Knowledge of student discipline procedures
• Ability to operate van
• CPR/CPI training preferred

Essential Functions:
• Attends meetings, training etc. for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting District and State regulations.
• Maintains assigned vehicle both interior and exterior (i.e. cleaning floors, windows, seats Etc.) for the purpose of maintaining safety, appearance and sanitation of the vehicle.

    Job Requirements

    • Major Responsibilities and Duties:
      Student management
      1. Help students with disabilities get on and off the van according to their individual need
      2. Learn and adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative and emotional needs.
      3. Supervise students as they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
      4. Maintain discipline and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
      5. Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
      6. Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
      7. Drive van to and from extracurricular activities/field trips.
      8. Check van for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of all necessary repairs.
      9. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, mechanical failure and complete required reports.
      10. Keep records on van mileage, gas and oil consumption and number of passengers transported
      11. Keep assigned van clean and fueled.
      Safety
      1. Inspect the van by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
      2. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
      3. Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar and reflectors.
      4. Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not
      immediately correctable.
      5. Report any hazardous conditions along scheduled route.
      Other
      1. Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
      2. Other duties as assigned.
      Equipment Used:
      School van, wheel chair lift ramp, locks, seat belts, harness, car seats, special adaptive equipment, safety equipment, (flares, reflective signs) and fire extinguisher.
